Title: problem with my indicators
Post by: Arightpest on November 28, 2004, 17:52:19
Hello all :D

I have got a problem with my indicators or should I say the flashing light on my dashboard when I turn the indicators on sometimes it flashes 2 or 3 times other times not at all plus the trailer light at the side of it never flashes. A friend of mine always flashes twice even with no trailer connected.  I have checked the bulbs by removing the instrument pod and all looks ok. Does anybody have any ideas maybe relay problems?

All the best

Mick

The trailer light on my 200 without the trailer hooked up flashes once with the main indicator one when first operated.

I'd check the relay first, you can buy a heavy duty flasher relay for towing.

I recall something about problem flashers on Discos because it's not a normal flasher unit, don't some have 2 rear indicators?  in which case a normal trailer flasher would be lighting the trailer tell-tale all the time.

Incidentally these usually flash once or twice as an accepted 'bulb test' but it is caused by the bulb resistance being lower in a cold bulb which then draws more current, the relay is current sensing so thinks there are more bulbs connected.  So I'm told.

That's right... it's actually described as a "feature" in the Owners Manual :-)

Hello all

I will look into the relay side of it. The strange thing is the lights work ok and I can hear the flasher unit clicking away quite happily but just the light on the dash having a mad few minutes when its wants to. I have also had an idea before spending more money I will ask my mate to pull his out and see if that any better?

If you need a new flasher unit, you can get one from Halfords for a heck of a lot less than the dealer price.  It's not in Halfords' book, but take your old one in and compare, and you'll find one of their standard ones matches perfectly.

You can indeed, but they are cheaply made and make more noise when flashing than the LR ones.

I know I bought one, finally went for a HD flasher unit from LR.

Maybe you had a duff one.  Mine sounded different, but it wasn't any noisier.
