the rev counter in my 3.9 rangie 93k has died, everything else is workin lights speedo etc anyone have any idea what it might be? :)
-
Yeap, it works from a tapping to one phase of the alternator via a connector on the back. These snap off a lot, or get full of crud.
-
does the fuel gauge / temp gauge work?
on my 86 sometimes they all stop working...i guess its a dodgy earth in the dial housing
-
yep fuel and temp gauges work fine all lights are workin but rev counter is dead ? :o

Wire to alt. goes to terminal marked 'w' for rev counter
Think wire is white with a thin black stripe

Must b a break in the wire somewer it,s connected both ends but still wont work, but batt charging properly :)
-
It's just possible the rev counter is bust :?
-
can the revounter b replaced without changing the whole speedo unit as well?
-
If you've got a multimeter, you can test the wire end to end by taking the back of the instrument cluster off and connecting the probe into the connector here and obviously the other at the other end.
Ant replaced his alternator recently only to discover the tacho no longer worked. Refitting the old alternator showed that the new alternator was at fault.
It still charged properly, but the tacho output did not work. So it is possible your alternator is at fault.

Thanks for all the help guys have to try it at the weekend :D

In the back of the dash panel, behind the tacho, is a little sub-module that is screwed on. It has an edge connector that presses against the flexible PCB contacts. If I remember right this module carries the regulator for fuel/temp guages AND the tacho amp.
I had a tacho that came and went for ages until I found that the modules contact fingers weren't aligned with the flexi PCB fingers properly. Ovaled out the fixing screw holes so it aligned better ... hey presto.
