Hi all
Just lost 5th and Reverse in my 300 tdi Discovery. Do I bite the bullet and just call Ashcrofts for a new one or does anyone know if a) this is a common problem and b) is it worth fixing?
Thanks

Got to be worth a look at the selector unit at the base of the gearstick, either way you will have to access this part to get the box out, and it may just be the selector unit/stick playing up

Have had this before, I found I could temporarily fix it by removing the gear selector and cover, and gain access to the box.
There you will see a large gear wheel with a shim sat directly behind it (to the rear), which has three little dogs in it, by rotating the shaft, I found that one had come loose and was hanging out of the syncro unit.
Simply pop it back in, and then "adjust" the shim with a flat bar, or stong screwdriver to close up any gaps.
Worked o mine for about six months

Thanks chaps 8)
Gonna make some time (maybe) at the weekend to have a look

Well after an expert (Dr Neil) opinion.......box is U/S :(
I suppose the obvious place to source a recon R380 is Ashcrofts but does anyone have any experience of other specialists before I part with my readies?

City Gearboxes in Coventry have a good reputation.

City Gearboxes have the gearbox now (thanks Wolfie). Gary there informs me that it is quite a mess so is doing a full recon for £395 + vat 8)
