Title: vibrating along!!!
Post by: muddyjames on May 10, 2007, 19:32:08
I had a wheel bearing changed in the front right wheel as it was mega loose. I have towed my caravan since then but no of roading :(

When under load at about 3500rpm I get a massive vibrating feeling through the steering wheel and body and seats etc. It is like I am going over huge rumble strips in the road. It doesnt happen all the time just sometimes, but if it does happen it is at about 3500rpm.

anyone got any ideas before something breaks and falls off???

How do I check the uj's?

Am I now going to go down the non return slippery slope of replacing 1 item which in turn puts more strain on another item more expensive and so on and so on until the engine or gearbox goes pop?

i dunno about the serious money part but if it is the uj's then there fairly cheap.
so you go lay in the dirt under your truck with it out of gear and the handbrake on. grab hold of the shaft front or rear, check both.and try and rock it, if you can see that there is play in the bearings or the shaft then it could be them, also if its hard to tell, grab hold of one side of the yoke in each hand and wiggle it and see if you can see any play in it,
other than that mate i dunno some one will have some more ideas. not saying its th ujs but my truck shook likke a t*wat since i towed my mate home lastnite, the ujs wernt to healthy before hand tho, i shall keep an eye out for wat others have to say incase the uj's dont fix the vibrating in my truck! hope this helps! sorry im not very good at explaining things ! lol

Sounds like UJ's to me also. I got it after towing a mates boat back to wigan from south shields.

Got under the truck with a big screwy, inserted it into the gap between yokes in the uj and tested for play. Nothing, tight as a drum. Rolled the vehicle forwards a few feet to rotate the prop and tried again. Slapping around like a Geordie lass in ibiza :)

I replaced the front gearbox end uj. After a few trips of road recently I'm getting a vibration on deceleration from motorway speeds. Feels just the same as last time.

I've spotted pairs of Hardy Spicer (Good brand) UJ's on paddocks site for about a tenner, and the rubber rear couplings are cheap to. I'll replace all the joints on both props pretty soon i think.

Good luck with yours,

Stu

I had a similar thing on a Fiesta and it was the muppet who did the bearings up had tightened them to 18lb/ft and not slackened them back off, they lasted a fortnight and sounded exactly as you describe.

just got my parts and fitted them and its cured the vibration and most of the clunking in the drive line so im happy cost me 9 pound summat for the uj and being the clever bloke i got carried away with the grinder and went through yoke! never mind a second hand one was sourced and everything is spot on! for now anyway! until next week when something else breaks!
