Olympus are a good one,
Their lenses are top-notch opticals.

Talk to 'Vicky', she used to work in the shop for Jessops

This is the one I useC-350 ZOOM (http://www.olympus-europa.com/consumer/29_C-350_ZOOM.htm)

I've put a 128mb card in it & can get up to about 980 frames from it (at 640x480)

The most important thing is to invest in some decent (at least 1300mAh) Ni-Mh batteries. Without them you'll need shares in Duracell

My kids have just bought me one from Argos. A Fuji E510. It is discounted to £179 at the moment. Tesco are doing one for around £50 a Vivitar. THey went head to head with Dixons etc on that particular model I think they've now matched the Tescos price.

Have just bought myself a Canon Powershot A400, currently on sale in Jessops for £130 with a case, a table top tripod, and two memory cards (16MB and 64MB).

Seems quite nice, although I'm not entirely sure about the battery life, ate the first set of batteries whilst playing with it this afternoon.  I'm hoping it was just a set of duff batteries.

Has some nice features, though. I really like the auto-rotate, which figures out which way up the camera was, so you don't get portrait shots that you need to turn your head to view when you download them onto the computer.

For the compact stuff, I'd recommend Fuji... Always been impressed with the metering and focussing capabilities and seem to be pretty good in low light.

Here is a little camera guide http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19929

Things to look out for.....
Digital Zoom.... Take a 4Mp camera with 2 x zoom, well done, you now have a 2Mp camera.... Waste of space.
Optical zoom.... get as much as possible....
Ignore the guy on that page..... more Mp = more balls... :)
I use a Sony and like it. would buy another anytime. but you are tied with the Memory sticks.
If you want to video, check it does sound as well.
Tesco's had a 3 or 4Mp camera for about £70 with Optical zoom recently.
Spend the extra tenner and get fast memory, you know it makes sense.

Oh, and do listen to the chap on the site about how fast before it takes a pic.... it WILL drive you nuts when you get all your pictures a second after the action happened.

My suggestion is to go to PC World, Comet, Currys etc etc. get as much info as you can.

Then use Kelkoo and the likes to find it cheaper.

www.7dayshop.com are good for all photo stuff. Mem cards and Batteries.

I don't use anything below 2100Mah NiMh batteries... you end up changing them all the time.....

Ive been using a Sony DSC-P71 for the last couple of years, they come with stamina batteries and they last really well. Its 3.2 million pixels with 6X zoom. its handy to use and dead easy. I bought an extra 64meg memory stick with it and I get by no problem!

Cliff & Guy;
Thanks for your votes of confidence, but that particular model has been superceded now (I think), but you might find some 'old' stock at a discount.

As 'EvilEd' states, the major problem with a digital camera is the delay between pressing the 'shutter' button & the image being taken.
It's a bug-bear' as I missed some photos of LNER 4472 'Flying Scotsman' & BR45407 due to this

Will there be enough Deltics (http://www.55s.co.uk/) here for you?

I put one of them in my trolley the other day, only to find out that they'd run out of cameras, and the boxes with "Empty box, please take to checkout" stuck to them should have been taken off display.

We have a kodak, it's a little more than you want to pay anyway but the software has completely a***d up 2 computers now!  I'd have expected better.

Try watching bid-up TV on a Friday night (sad, I know) they are always selling them and no-one watches late on a Friday so they go for peanuts.
