Does anyone know why, and any remedy for why whenever I drive my 2.25 diesel oil always comes out from around the breather on the rocker cover? I have replaced the breather and tried to unblock any blocks in the pipes, but have been unsuccessful. Any help would be appreciated as I am constantly losing oil. Thanks Neil

Hmm. Not that I doubt you, but I'd like to think thats unlikely as have changed the head and gasket, but the problem remains. Could it be anything to do with the main block?

rings? sounds like excessive crankcase pressure

Yes, sounds like the crankcase is pressurising. In other words, the engine is tired and breathing heavily.

Is there a remedy for that? is it sump off, pistons out, new rings?

sounds that way - quite easy, just a bit time consuming!

Ok, thanks for the help guys. Sounds like I'm going to get oily again! Oh well, thats all part of the joy of owning an old Landy.

You may find it easier to do if you remove the engine and have an engine stand to place it on while you work on it.
Wear in the bores can also cause these symptoms, in which case a rehone at least would be required if not a rebore. Rebore then means that new pistons are needed etc.

For now will try a makeshirt replacement to try and collect the oil which is forced up, maybe through the oil filler pipe. Then whilst living with this short-term, will get an engine short re-built and then when I get a chance swap the engines.

My 2.25D likes to oil the outside of the rocker cover, I wipe it off but it keeps coming back, seems to be the way they are to a degree I think.
Wether its a problem I think depends on how much oil it is, does it just look messy or are you poreing oil into it? Does it breathe heavily if you take the oil filler off when the engines running?
My engine uses less than a litre of oil every 2000miles and doesn't breathe much. Also does 30mpg regularly so its obvelouly not in bad shape. It just likes to be covered in oil it would seem. It'll get some new Gasgets and cleaned out breather soon when I check the tappets but I wouldn't be surprised if it makes no difference to the leak. Seems to be a diesel thing.

before you start ripping the pistons out, do a compresion test.
on every engine ive worked on, their is a gause pad inside the rocker top where the breather pipe is fitted. this catches the oil and lets it drip back into the top of the head. im not sure on a LR engines, but is there somthing like that missing?
might be something daft like that.

I think what you refer to is the breather, which is the part where the oil is leaking from around the edges of. It has a good seal, so it would apear to be under some pressure.
She isn't breathing too heavily when the oil fller is off. It sounds to be the same as what you have S188. It is just messy, but I do get good mpg.

Thats what we always think. The pipe isn't blocked as I have had a piece of wire through it. The air inlet has a bend on the end, which I can't get wire around, it doesn't appear blocked, but I guess there is a chance that it is.
My dad has fabricated an oil filler with a pipe off of it going into a bottle (to collect any oil) to see if that helps resolve the problem.
