Title: Drain/refill ZF auto - help please ;-)
Post by: harveyg77 on May 14, 2007, 19:26:40
Hi all,

Any ideas where the fill point is on a Rangie P38a 2.5dt auto? Its the ZF 4speed unit, 51 plate car.

I found a screw in the front of the sump near the top and a coresponding one at the bottom, so undid the top and got covered in oil whilst frantically trying to refit it. Is my box over-filled or is there somewhere else to fill it? I sure as hell can't find it ;-)

Cheers H

Hi.the zf 22hp auto box has a drain plug in the sump, then you refill the gear box via the dip stick tube.then run the engine with the gear box in neutral to check the oil level this is best done with engine and box cold.

                              hope this helps
                   regards  john t :D

I thought they had stopped the filling via the dipstick with the RRC?

That's the right place to fill the auto box, it's just that it's a two man job :D  one in the car with engine running moving the shift lever and the other one topping the 'box up till it trickles out of the filler underneath.
My DII is exactly the same. :x
As with the RRC you still have to check the level with the engine running, shift the level slowly through the gears then into neutral, then check the level, but they didn't give us a dipstick to check it with

If it's got a dipstick, that's where you fill it but I think they are saying the P38 doesn't have a dipstick.  Clever, not.

Could be worse, some BMW you just fit a one-shot can of oil, no topping up, no flushing , nowt.

I dont know if they did on the p38a, what was being said was if it did have a dipstick thats where you fill it, the ZF 4 speed like fitted to my 1990 classic has a dipstick, but i am sure you fill it up through a hole on the side of the box on the p38??

Hi guys,

I guess there must have been some changes to the box as it evolved. Mine is a 2001 51 plate unit. There is definately no dipstick for the autobox. The only logical fil point is the screw towards the top on the front of the gearbox sump. The only reason I didn'y use this is because ATF poured out when I removed it ;-)

She's running sweet as a nut so I will leave alone!

Thanks,
H

with the engine idling in neutral (hand brake on aswell) fill the sum throughthe hole above the sump till oil pours in your face then flick trough the gears and repeat they got rid of the dipstick in 1999 because it was to sensible   i dont think they realy expected you to want to change it but it should be just like the engine oil if you want it to last
