what kind of metal is the front diff and axle made of cause i have split it and i need to weld it
-
Thin steel, if you try to arc weld it it'll blow straight thru unless you're really good, so use a mig.
Thats the advice i was given. Unfortunately as I have neither and cant weld, a flattend piece of copper pipe and some rivets and instant gasket seems to be doing the trick !

Diff gaurds are a good idea eh!!

i am a welder by trade and i know that it doesnt reley matter how much you weld something like that it will never be at its best. but if you were to weld it you need to drill a hole at each end of the crack provided it doesnt Interfere with the internal parts(to stop it from cracking further) and either tig or mig weld it up. dont arc weld it.

By a new cover and weld on a new one...., then fit diff guard....., they do exactly what it says on the box

I'm not sure a diff guard would have worked for me. As you can see the plate is on the top of the diff, I have no idea how it got holed (Its like a slot big enough to take a 50p piece), but it hadnt been off road when I fixed this last year.
