You should be able to pick up a fairly decent earlyish Nissan Terrano 2 (or Ford Maverick, they seem a bit cheaper) for that sort of money. 2.7TD engine, same a london taxi's if thats reliable enough for you. LSD rear axle, switchable 4x4 with auto free wheeling hubs, so no dragging 4x4 runing gear around on the road. There's no centre so behaves like a locked one when in 4x4. Don't think you'll find much else diesil at that sort of price except perhaps older stuff where parts start to be an issue. Most of the parts on the T2/Mav are the same so you can still get them off the shelve. Modified bits can be thin on the ground but thats getting better.

some people may dis agree but the 2.8td is the best to go for. the earlier 2.3's were a little slow but as far as i know reliable. they seem to get a little bad press but worked as a tech for vauxhaull a few years ago ,never seen that many in with probs. cheers alan......

Being a land rover fan, it pains me to say this!  My missus has a 2.8 tdi frontera that cost us a grand, it sailed through its MOT 2 weeks back with not even an advice note.  I much prefer land rover but I have never had a £1000 landy sail through with no advisories and no work.

I just checked the MPG on the frontera, we averaged 33mpg over just under 500 miles.  Majority of it was short local stuff, few semi rural 30mile ish trips, one of which was towing a 1000kg caravan!  We had a 2.4 petrol frontera lwb a while back, that gave us a years trouble free motoring even with 124k up it.  Bloody thirsty tho.

I thought 33mpg was quite respectable for a 2.8tdi lwb 4x4.

Actually, sod it!  Buy a disco they are much better, I just cant really explain why!  :D

You gotta think about running/busting stiff costs too, cheap parts means green oval.

As a landy fan and owner of a freebie and disco it pains me to say.......get a Jeep Cherokee very capable, good turn of speed, faultless straight six engine at £1000 you will get a good one as people are terrified of the MPG from the 4.0l engine but from my experience they return a lot better mpg than a V8 disco. I bought one 2 yrs ago for £1100 off ebay and it was superb but the call of landy was too much to bare.

Deiseisel Jeep Cherrys can have engine issues but a 4l Cherry can give 19 -24 mpg ..they are dirt cheap to buy if you look around, can be fully loaded  ....and as for off road capabilities....

Old Series for off road if you can't afford a 90 or Defender. RR Classic iof you can afford fuel for V8- Discos are cheap now-I will probably replace my RR with one for fun.

On road we have a Frontera 2.2dti. Seems okay off road but limited use as it is only just past 3 years old. Good caravan towcar-why we have it!

Very good car IMHO better than the last model Freelander. More legroom, front and rear, seat has height adjustment ( Iam tall!) Has a chassis and low box! 30-35mpg, quite pokey too!

New Freelander is nice but pricey.
