OK I'm thinking of buying a new truck.
I've been looking on eBay and there are loads to choose from.
I am looking to spend 4-5 grand at the most.
What problems am I looking at with say a p38 or a diesel freelander?
Would it be worth getting a v8 with gas compared to the diesel.

Not sure about any issues with either vehicle.... but i think a P38 has loads more class/style than a freeloader. Better still get a Bowler.

You'll get a lot of motor for your money with a P38, but remember how expensive it was when it was new - means some of your bills could be proportionately large! For eg - if the heater motor packs up you have to remove the whole dash to get at it.
Not many off roading goodies for the P38 but I guess you're not buying it for that?
P38 has tons of electrickery, freelander has probs with the rear door glass motor packing in, rear door seals, and probs with the viscous coupling and drive reduction unit at the back.
I've been v tempted by both during my day dreams of what 4x4 to get next and then a 90, landcruiser, pick up truck etc etc!

If i remember correctly, a LOT of people had problems with the P38.
Pretty much everything on it is electrical, so unless your an electrician, i'd go for the freelander, but the rear door window is the major let down with those (as previously stated).
Personally, I'd buy a defender.

I have a 90 and I am building a 110. I have a series 11 which I am selling, I have just sold my Disco V8I. I use to own a RRC. I cant afford a new disco or rangie.
I am toying with leaving the green oval, but you know what that will start :lol:
I have never driven a p38 or a freelander. I don't want it for off road use that is what the 90 is for.
This makes me look bad. I either cant hold down a truck or I get bored easily :lol:

I would beware of a cheapo P38. It may cost you a few grand to buy but it's still got the running costs of a 60 grand truck (notwithstanding that things like the EAS are much cheaper to repair now than they used to be). I've said elsewhere, based on my experiences and listening to those of many others, they're great trucks to drive but can be hugely complex to run and maintain. For that sort of money I'd get a Freebie TD4; OK, not in the same league as a P38 in terms of luxury but will save a lot of headaches.

Oh, on the P38, at that sort of price/mileage you'll need to look out for:
EAS problems - airbags, valve block, compressors, unions
HEVAC issues - basically, the climate control not working properly
Random electrical gremlins - anything from random warning lights to immobiliser issues
4.0 V8: porous block
4.6 V8: porous block, slipping liners very common
Overheating damage on either V8
Clunky auto gearchange
ABS accumulator discharging
MAF meter faulty (over 400 quid for a new one)
General wear & tear eg electric windows / electric seat motors failed

If you are not 100% pro green/blue oval...then think of a ZG/WG Jeep Grand Cherokee...for that money :wink:

spend 2-3k on a mint late 80's RRC...stick to a 3.9 Vogue or similar.
nowhere near as much to go wrong as a P38 but still a very comfortable and classy motor.
make sure you buy an LPG'd one, they can be found for that kind of money.
then shove the rest of your cash back in your pocket.

I can recommend a freelander as my wife has one, cant fault it. It is a TD4 and is surprisingly quick even though it is an auto. As for budget you may struggle to get a TD4 for £4-5k . Range Rover p38 very nice to drive ....very expensive to fix and run.

Ever been in a freelander that's more than 4 years old? The viscous coupling makes a really horrible noise, one that seems to get inside your head and make your eyes vibrate! I test-drove one when I was looking at getting a 4x4 of my own (I hate driving RRB's Blue). I am now the proud owner of an L plate rangie, it's a 300tdi. I wouldn't swop for anything else now. Don't go for the toylander (sorry, freelander) you will definitely regret it. As for the other suggestions from the dark side, if it ain't got the green oval, it's an impostor.
You know you want the rangie, BUT I'd go for a classic rather than a P38, unless you know a mechanic that is willing to be paid in beer!

I second that. RRCs are amazing. and IMHO look better than the newer versions. no older than a vouge model. try to get anb LPG one, or one of the later diesel models.
worst point about the RR's. the two door models side doors were VERY heavy, and you may want to beef up the hindges / bulkhead.
