Is that thing braked?
If not I would remove the post if you can, not the sort of thing you really want to advertise.
-
its breaked yes :)
-
Landies are plated to tow 3.5 tonnes unbraked - not a problem.
I thought the legal limit for an unbraked trailer was 750KG?

Landies are plated to tow 3.5 tonnes unbraked - not a problem, though it was probably braked anyway.
What are you on about?? it is illegal for any vehicle to tow an unbraked trailer with a gvw of more than 750Kg. Pleas try reading some of the threads on Towing which have been posted on this and other site. before posting facts which are completely false..

not to argue but im sure he has just said it was breaked,
well done for towing that  especially in a old one like that, i guess its built to last
cheers kieran

He did it was the post that said you can pull upto 3.5tonnes unbraked I've taken issue with. someone on here could read that and believe it. They could seriously injure or kill themselves or someone else whilst trying to tow a massive trailer with no brakes.
-
Right - well I've deleted the posts but that was what I've been informed by more than one Landy owner, perhaps it was some specific varients or even export models that have been reimported so I'll check the info with them. Or of course it could be the usual LR owner bragging about how good they are, you know like how reliable, cheap to run and own etc

Most foreign cars, are not plated to pull the loads a Land Rover is.

My Daihatsu Is....

Nice one did you have to move all of them

My Daihatsu Is....
Patrols, Land Cruisers etc etc etc
All of which would have done it with less effort and more than likely used less fuel.
-
Shogun is 3.3 tonnes..... and i have had a series and love LR's but my old Shogun would do the journey on half the fuel with twice the comfort.
-
I didnt think that series landies were rated to 3.5 tonnes. I wouldnt like to tow 3.5tonnes behind a series landy due to the ability in stopping with drum breaks!
That trailer looks pretty wide to me as well. Most probably the angle of the camera though.
If the series engine is in tip top condition then they do tow well. My dad towed a 1200kg 16ft caravan to the south of France and back twice with a series 3 swb diesel and it performed well although he was slightly deffer after each trip
-
James I am 99% sure you are right that a series motor is plated to the same gross train weight as the defender. Trouble is I can't remember what the gross train for a series is.
If I remember rightly the maximum trailer dimensions towed by a vehicle with a gross weight of less than 3500kg is 23' long and 7'6'' wide.
Its certainly an achievement anyway.
-
Doing my best to clear things up the regulations are as follows.
On British roads a trailer without its own braking system cannot exceed 750Kg.
The towing capacity of most modern vehicles under 3500Kg can be found HERE (http://www.clicreports.co.uk/) click on Kerbweights
The maximum size of trailer towable on the British roads by a vehicle under 3500Kg in weight is 2.3 Metres wide and 7 Metres long not including A frame, see HERE (http://www.clicreports.co.uk/) click on Towing guide and then click on The Code.
This information is to the best of my knowledge but if I reiterate something told to me by a third party and it turns out to be wrong please feel free to correct me.

I wasn't been snotty, and I never spit my dummy ever. as I pointed out previously posting a reply stating that a landrover is allowed to pull a 3.5 tonne unbraked trailer is not only factually incorrect, but if a newby read it and believed it they could end up been seriously injured or killed, as a result.
-
still its obvisously a very well restored series well done to owner whatever people say:)
i bet it was scarey driving that over them hills wasnt it?
kieran
:)

Bigant, I'm sure that your Landy is very capable and has proved it by towing that over some big hills but why do you automatically have to have a go at Japanese cars and use the term "Jap Crap".
If Jap motors kept breaking down or falling apart then I could understand it but in 7 laning outings my little Vitara has never broken down or even missed a beat whilst most of my buddies in Landies have had at least one problem or another causing us to do roadside repairs.
Come on guys, if you prefer a make of motor then that's fine but don't slag off other peoples rides by using inaccurate descriptions.

and if they're daft enough to believe everything they read on internet forums without checking with someone official...i doubt 'i read it on an internet forum' would stand up in court...
-
alls i can say is that it was an experience! and yes the trailer was wide! we only stopped 3 times to let the tyres cool down! lol
must admit tho i was majorly suprised that the little beast pulled in 2 wheel drive and never dropped to first not even on the stubborn banks!
what a day out!

well said, you can only do that on a LR only forum so you have less chance of being caught :D
Have to admit to liking the older jap stuff, new stuff is too plastic and poncy for me, just like discos and rangies :? would you honestly take a modern shogun or similair up into the woods?
On tarmac is a different story
