Title: Bad earth?
Post by: Bob696 on May 21, 2007, 20:56:50
When I put leccy fan on the temp guage goes up   It also goes up when I put the lights on.

Also on occasions I am just getting a clunk (click) sound when I try and start her. Sometimes it can take 5 or 6 attempts to get the starter motor to turn but then she fires up immidiatly.

I am correct in thinking all this could be attributed to a bad earth?

BTW its on the 200Tdi

Yep I would say so. Next time it won't start try connecting a jump lead from battery earth to engine block or engine earth point. Then see if it starts.

How about connecting the earth point on the gearbox/transfer box to chassis as well? Would that help?

(I wired another earth strap in parralel to the original and it made no difference)

I've heard of someone wiring the battery earth direct to the gearbox. I might do that myself. Got some kin big earth cable I took off an aircraft the other day, think that might just suffice.
