Looks like the ball has started rolling for pay as you go , on various roads of the UK.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6678915.stm
Just think of all the money, which will be paid to the government, then only to be swallowed up by local council bureaucracy.
Then they will realise, it has not made a single bit of difference to the congestion on the road, will probably only price out the very few who cannot afford it.
Still they know this already, though what a way to make a fast buck
So much for signing the petition, still did not expect much from the muppets in charge at the moment.

I agree... "Petitions are a total waste of time".
I do feel sorry for those who are already struggling to afford the costs of getting to and from work on a low salary. (The poor will get poorer as per usual).
-
So what can be done about this?
I am getting seriously riled about this. I pay tax on my cars, I pay tax on the fuel, where does it end?
As mentioned already, it is not going to ease congestion. where is all the money raised going to go?
I like millions of others have to use my car to get to work. I can't use public transport as buses and trains don't run to where I work, nor do they run at times that correspond with my shifts, so I am left with no option.
Is this Government that blind, deaf and stupid that they don't realise they are really peeing off a lot of people, or are they that arrogant that they don't care?
I don't want to live in a city where everything is laid on for me. What about the people who live in places that don't have regular transport routes.
This country is becoming a Soviet style state run by faceless, uncaring bureaucrats.
I am now going before I start to swear, and break things! :x :x :x :x

Wonder if there is anyway to stop this unfair "overcharging" via Brussels? Surely paying road tax entitles the bearer to travel freely on all roads which aren't private?
-
Just remember that the current lot are not likely to get in again at the next general elections...

the bright spark who thought of these daft idea's never thought of the implications did they?
so, your route to work is one of these roads....call it 2 quid a day, 5 day working week that gives u 10 quid just to get to work, so who funds it ? yhe boss wont so what you going do ? quit...go on the doel and let the goverment pay you for sitting down and doing nuffin
the school run....mums aint going pay, they move there kids to another school
housing market...no body going buy new houses cos the surrounding area is a charge area
public transport will get over run...and then prices will go up to fund for
new vehicles to expand there fleet
and many many more, they're just so dim, 5 years...the citys will be ghost towns
the country is nackered, best solution sod off to another country

will probably only price out the very few who cannot afford it.
Probably not, have you heard about unisured, unlicend drivers. They might not be able to afford to drive but that just means they won't pay rather than not drive.
My biggest fear/problem with the whole thing of "pay as you go" roads is not whether its right or wrong, but how the heck are the goverment going to implemet it, chances are it will be an increadibly complex scheame they devised.
Mark my words, the simplest soulution are envitably the best, especially given the goverments track record of things like SFP and hospitals which they have just made more complex leading to inevitable failure.
The simplest solution is probbaly to just raise the tax on fuel (particuarly fossil fuels) and drop the price of road tax. This is as simple as it could get. It makes owning a car cheap (therefore not denying anyone the privalige) whalst making them pay accordingly for their use. The amount you pay would be relative to the amount of fuel your used which would be relavtie to the emission you car would generate. whalst also being proportional to the amount of congestition generated. I could go on......
As i say there is no way the british govement would ever do the simplest thing because they might actually work , or because that even if it messes up its still financially in their favour and that all that matters anyway.

Don't you worry, the government I have heard as we speak, are setting up a canal congestion investigation department.
Apparently the larger your snorkel, the higher the tax

Thought ocured to me the other day...How much will the Toll be to drive on greenlanes? Obveously it should be free as that about as much money as the counsel spend maintaining many; wouldn't surprise me though if someone sets them rather high though.
