WARNING controversal question!!
why do v8 owners go to the bother and hassle to have snorkels when they can only seem drive through puddles?
-
Good question, Ive never seen one of the damned things run straight even after a light rain shower!
Has anyone built one that can really run immersed in water?
-
Tigger could for one, no distributor .. :)
All you need is to spend some time and care making sure the dizzy cap doesn't let water in and you stand a chance :)

and, of course, do something about the holes in the dizzy itself (http://www.rhel.co.uk/tomcattech/dizzy.htm).

I haven't bothered with a snorkel.... too much trouble plumbing it in anyway  Just have to avoid water more than 3 feet deep!
-
We have a 'snorkal' to fit onto sally the camper but the idea is for it be more of a 'raised air intake'.
She has a RR 3.5efi fitted and the air intake is currently behind the engine and she gets lots of dust and crud in it as well as hot air from the engine.
Thoughts are that taking the air from higher up it will be cooler and cleaner (especialy with the pre cleaner we have to put on it)
-
I dunk my v8 and the only problem i have is with the lpg evaporater when its raining it dont like little puddles
-
Can't say as I have problems with actual water.....
-
A raised intake like mine :D

Obviously not a V8
But better than the stupid air intake via the wheel arch

I have a snorkle on my disco but It is not there to allow me to drive through deep water, it is there to safeguard the engine and avoid destroying it by sucking up a load of water.
It does look good too!

Surely if you didn't traverse "deep" water you wouldn't need a snorkle ?
-
Well, I have been a few places where I have got the filter soaked, not intentionally but it happens
-
I'll second that, my snorkel is there as a precaution, not there because I need it. A few times we've been out and water is deeper than expected, without the snorkel I would have had to rebuild the engine at least once by now.
-
I think this is what your trying to avoid

It all turned out well in the end and yes thats water coming out of the engine via the glow plug sockets

Somehow I think the Army would dispute that when they used the 10FC in amphiibious trials.
The 'plimsoll line' was half-way up the windscreen, & that was in the sea, not a wading tank!!!

as you say it was a 'trial'

The v8's at work have no problems with water

Yes, but it was also done during exercises & therefore accepted practice
Occasionally Craddocks sell waterproofed distributors & HT leads for the V8

would like to see a v8 running underwater , a mere splash from the fan normally plays havoc with them

What't the beef about V8's for ?
Is this another diesel Landy owner showing his inferiority complex about his underpowered ickle engine ?
I would like to know the % of diesel owners with snorkels that go wading with them - not as high as you would like to think
Right - that's my tuppence worth - off out to listen to my lovely V8 burbling - and no it doesn't have a snorkel
-
I have a V8 & diesels & have no problem with either in deep water. I do take time to waterproof the V8 well with silicone grease but it never misses a beat under water. 8)

this is the only pic i have of mine in the water

but at work last week i steam cleaned the engine, totally soaked the dizzy and leads. just for a laugh i thought i wopuld see if it starts, and i did all 8 of em.
mine has a luminition kit, high output electronic type coil. thats it. and its never cut out (or even lost a cylinder), when all the elecy is wet through.

have a set o them for sale if any one is interested

the 24v electrics fitted to the 101 are actually pretty tolerant of water, the dizzy iirc is sealed and the ht leads are fully screened with a screw fitting on to the plugs and dizzy cap.
