First I heard about this http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=14581&st=0&#entry150732 and wasn't sure if the rest of you knew about the fact that fitting Bullbars is now illegal!!!!
-
God damn EU [illiterate chewers]!!!!!!!!!!!!!
always pick on the 4x4 drivers....
whats the deal with old 4x4's that are already fitted with them etc?
-
Well new cars haven't been allowed to have them for years now - that's why LR only sell the plastic ones.
Just buy and fit a rusty one.
-
Winch bumper will be next unless you cover it with a mattress.
-
damn it! if you already have a bullbar, is it able to stay on? grrrrrrrrrr :x

From reading those other topics I would say that anything that was fitted prior to May 25th is legal. I may be wrong, but that seems to be the opinion on the other forums Dave.

hi all
I was at scorpions on saturday and i thought i overheard the salesman say that they were going to stop producing a lot of their winch bumpers does to some EU law.
i wonder if someone can clear this up for us.

From an informed source...
It is now not allowed to produce a-bars or bullbars for fitment to vehicles, nor may any new vehicle have one fitted.
It's not retroactive, so anything already fitted to a vehicle, or sat on a shelf waiting to be sold is fine.
And as for opposing it, you didn't get chance to do that in October 2005, as this is just putting into law the EU directive passed then.
Ho hum, etc...
-
definition of 'a bars' and 'bullbars' being...?
and from what i read, fitting old bars to old cars is fine?

Irrelevant as you won't be able to buy anything that's illigal ? ;)

That is my understanding
-
would anyone know what they class as an old vehicle? is there a specific date for that?
cheers all
-
I am under the understanding that it's three days ago :D
However, this is putting into law an EU directive from October 2005, so I'd imagine it's not going to be any earlier than that..
-
so that will be scaned pics of bull bars and winch bumpers taken from the glossys edited and added to old photos of your cars to prove you had them before the date  I love photo shop

Supposing some unscrupulous dealer tells you they are legal...then you got pulled and done for it...where do you stand?
If they are going to say what you can't fit to a vehicle it would be nice to have a definition of what it is that is illegal.
Does a rubber 'trim' panel (say for example one that resembles a rubber A bar) count? Or because it's sold as a trim panel and not an A bar does that make it legal?
-
Well - after reading through lots of web pages it seems (as Datalas has already posted) the new law prevents anyone from 'Manufacturing. or 'selling' bars.
At the moment it seems not to prevent you from fitting them!

The new law only applies to steel bullbars & Af rames not to the new ABS/plastic bars. So Bullbars and A frames haven't been banned they just hve to be made out of a different material, then they used to be.

Do they have to be entierly made from a soft material or could you just padd a steel frame?

Have to be type approved/homologated or whatever the want to call it, there is currently only 1 uk manufacturer, who I've forgotten.

and their retail price is over £400

I remeber readeading about 8 years ago that an Australian commpany had started to make rotamoulded Roo-bars, being a rotamoulding company themselves it was very cheap.
Don't know about the homologation thingy but if anyone's got the cash for the tooling..........
-
bloody stupid. quite honestly if i was going to be hit by a land rover and had two choices, i'd rather be hit by a bull bar which made the front of the vehicle as good as level, rather than have the steel box section bumper just bust my legs and slam my head into the bonnet instead.
although in all fairness, if i was about to be hit by a land rover, i most likely wouldnt give a flying toss whether it had a bullbar or not. the ~2 tons of metal would kind of sway my thoughts elsewhere
