try this

The fiddler and his wife, the piper and his mother, between them ate three half-loaves, three whole loaves and three-quarters of another. If each had an equal share, how many loaves did each eat?

One and three-quarter loaves each. The piper is the son of the fiddler and his wife. There are only three people, not four.

On a related note, can you think of a 5 letter word, 4 letters of which are vowels, and if you take away the last 4 letters it still reads the same?
