hi guys its a long one so bear with me....
right 2 weeks ago i drowned my defender with a retrofitted 200tdi engine in it....took ages to get rescued (about 4 hrs) and about halfway through the engine died......first diagnosis was the turbo dead (well dead as it turned out) but also no clutch or starter....anyway today the new turbo went on and i popped a new starter on aswell and all started ok (also i have to point out i have flushed and changed the engine oil twice because it was really thick but not gritty) anyways.....the clutch is still slipping massively so i tried flushing the bell housing with water with the engine running and had loads of gloopy stuff out and a bit more clutch....however checking things over i noticed the engine oil was a bit "yoghurty" telling me that water had got in somewhere and also after a wee while oil started dripping (albeit slowly) out of the bell housing (no i never had a wading plug in at the tim e of the incident) and lastly although the engine is running quite well i have noticed that at highish revs it seems to be a bit more "knocky" from the bottom end than it used to be. so.....over to you clever peeps to help me out pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee

Is it the rear main seal gone in front of the gear box ? I can remeber something like that happening on a old transit years ago i might be wrong as i am a plasterer
-
did you hydraulic lock the engine?
-
right....oil leak....will be the rear crank seal been torn or grit got behind it due to being submerged with no wading pug
also if you had no plug in the timing case i strongly advise you to fit a new timing belt SHARPLY before it snapps, as water will have stretched it like mad
the nocking....as said before and like ive asked before....did the engine hydraulic lock ? i.e injest water into the intake system...fill the intercooler ect ect and stop the engine ?
if so....i would bet anything that youve got atleast 1 bent conrod

I'll second that. :?

lol, at L0000k hehe
yeh dan is clever boy!

i dont think i had hydraulic lock the engine just slowed, refused to rev then just stopped.....the turbo was shot to bit but the guy who rebuilt it said it was because of oil starvation....i thought that was maybe because of water getting into the oil and making it too thick to pump....plus it was cold too cos of being sat in water.......oh and i have a breather pipe on the timing housing luckily!
-
my dad hydraulicked his astra, and that just slowed to a stop after he was well clear of the water. bent all 4 rods in the engine.
-
if it slowed and refused to rev then stop id say its injested water into the cylinders and locked itself,
turbo wise, if waters got in there then the water would have been dispursing the oil, so another words oil starvation
so did you have the pug in the bottom of the timing case ??
theres a bolt that should go in just behind the crank pulley
if it was me id be removing the head, as its done more damage than you may think
diesels and water dont mix when its injested as the compression just trashes the engine

wouldnt go that far

Agreed. Been there done that
Get the head off and have a look. I think youl find at least one con rod is needed. I hope i'm wrong but you need to make sure before you do more damage. Good luck
-
may i ask , four hours was a bit long, i hope you got some photos ?
can we see if you did?

retro fit another 200tdi lol, the one you have is completely f*cked. Hope that helps :D
u being serious  a 200tdi is only [!Expletive Deleted!] when the block is cracked
a days work would see that engine running properly again

yup the engines now out, gonna be stripped slowly and methodically and put back with new gubbins as and when required!
-
if you need con rods which i bet you will, ive got a scrap 200tdi here were the block cracked on me when hitting some really deep water when i didnt expect it
you can have the block, complete with crank pistions ect ect,
i want everything else like head, sump timing case, pump ect ect as spares
let me no if that would help you

Yer.. its gonna be conrods bent... Mine wouldnt rev and slowed to a stop and i had bent two conrods and my crank...
-
unlucky there, i presume your snorkel failed to course the water intake :-(
might be time for me to check mine :-)
good luck with the con rods
