:cry: for a while now ive blamed not doing anything to the v8 on a dodgy starter motor........... :oops: ok ok lol i couldnt be arsed to clamber under it to change it.
ANYYYY ways ive now changed the starter motor and im getting exactly the same as i did with the old one........... yup u got it [!Expletive Deleted!] all
everything else works fuel pump etc as u can hear it all dials on the dash come up as norm but when i turn the key to fire it up everything goes dead.... until i release the key back.
b4 i started having trouble the ignition barrel would spin and one day i forgot myself and turned the key which in turn tore a wire "i think" from back of the barrel not a problem i thought as there was one empty slot on the barrel and i just crimped a new spade terminal on and stuck it onto the barrel in that empty slot.... does anyone know or have a diagram of the wiring of the back of a ignition barrel.... its on a 2a hoping all are the same but who knows lol

Seems to me that either you have a very weak earth or the ignition is worn out. If you jump a wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the small spade terminal on the starter solenoid it should spin the engine and indicate an ignition (or the wire from it), fault.

8) thanks ill better find a long bit of wire then lol the battery is in the rear tub of motor im sure ive summat to do it
ok so if the engine turns when ive done this does that mean wire or earth prob ?

Could be an earthing fault as mentioned, to even just the battery. Additionally a faulty starter solenoid can cause this to happen too.

If you turn the key and hear a small click, then it's likely that the main starter body is either not working or the current from the solenoid to the starter is not getting there. Checking the circuit of a starter motor is relatively easy. If you have a small test light, or justr a 12v bulb with two wires attached, such as an old side light or something, then remove the small wire from the small spade connector on the solenoid, attach one wire to it and the other to earth and get someone to turn the ignition as if to start the engine. If the light comes on then the ignition is ok (wiggle the key at the same time to test for bad contact). You are then left with either battery connection (earth or direct live from the battery), or the starter itself.

agreeing with the guys above, if it's been standing it may be that the batt is flat or a loose earth. if it's not the battery, try qiving it a crank start (if you can), as something may be ciesed, if it is, then this should fix the problem then try starting with the ignition

nope no small click when i turn the key infact if anything when key turns it stops everything
its been stood there since we moved in in feb and the car will start and drive ok if we bump/tow it

Bad earth.
Run a battery cable form the engine to the neg on the battery then try.

Try putting a wire between the feed and the return to the solenoid, turn the ignition on before putting the wire there, :oops: :oops: :oops: if granny sucking eggs comes to mind

I've had a wire come off the starter solenoid relay before, that had the same effect.

From recent bitter experience, I plump for solenoid too! :roll: :)

before you start with anything else , look at the last thing you did before you had the trouble . it sounds to me like you made a bad connection on the back of the switch which is causing a dead short and killing everything . you need to check with a multi-meter that you have made the right connection .
