Hi folks, local landy place fitted my brakes and new passenger chrome swivel yesterday, well while out driving today a weird and worrying sound developed sounds like it is under/side of disco it is a rhythmic clacking sound still there when coasting in neutral sounds louder sometimes than others.....any ideas ? :?

Which bit of the brakes did they replace? The whole calliper assembly and the discs, or just the pads?
Stone stuck in the disc? Or stone stuck in the tyre for that matter?

I have jacked up disco and rotated wheel does not click....but the new pads move forwards or backwards according to wheel direction turned. I think it may be them rattling in the calipers. I got the kit from mail order who assured me a 1996 300 tdi had pads retaining kit withe the pin and spring in the middle as on late 300 tdi. Is this correct?. Can anyone give me some help asap?. Cheers. Can provide phone number for any forthcoming advice. :(

Some cheap aftermarket brake pads do tend to be very poor quality. I've had this on normal cars once or twice. The brakes still work ok, but the noise is annoying. I suggest you take your truck back to the garage - considering what they charge, you would have expected them to have used a decent make of brake pad.

I supplied the brake kit, the pads and retaining kit are Mintex which i thought would be good?

The brake pads shouldn't move when the wheels rotate as there not in direct contact with the disks unless your braking.
Moving pads probably means that they are the wrong ones....., as they should just sit there in there locating slots. The spring and pins are there just to hold them in and to stop them rattling.....
Think you need to have someone look at them asap.......

I had this on mine with the last set of pads I fitted. The pads float backwards and forwards in the calliper. Mechanically they still work fine, but god do they sound 'orrid, and embarrassing. Changed them, problem gone !!

Just been out for a 40 min drive, all ok at first then "clack,clack,clack etc" but when brakes are applied it goes away immediately until i take foot off brake then it comes back again in a while,especially it seems at the lower end of the speedo and pulling up at home "CLACK,CLACK,CLACK!!!". So i do seem to think its definitely the pads rattling about especially when warmed up a bit?

Just a thought if they have changed the discs as well check they have not put a new bolt in that is too long and catching on something. or that they have tighten up the bolts and one is not loose catching on something.

That is the same symtoms as I had. High speed, fine, heavy braking, fine, low speed, in slow moving traffic, clack clack clack.

I have been trying to track down a very similar noise which appeared after fitting Halfords pads......... and come to think of it they did seem a bit loose in the calipers.
I was thinking it was a warped disc, but can't feel anything through the wheel under any type of braking.
It is a definite clacking sound as described above.

Hi
I'm about to order new disks and pads (+ fitting kits) for my 300 tdi. The pads will be either Mintex or Lockheed (both about the same price).
What exactly was the problem with the pads? Did the garage replace with other Mintex ones or with another make? Should I go for the Lockheed ones or look for another well known make?

May not have been the pads :shock: I had a Ford Granada once (also 5 stud wheels) and this noise started after I had new tyres fitted. Because the tyre fitter did the wheelnuts up in rotation rather than opposing, the wheelnuts were tight but the wheel was jammed on the hub lip. This left the disc loose enough to bounce on the studs. Removed the wheel and refitted, noise disappeared. So much for a Quick Fit fitter :evil: :lol:
