It depends really what you want it for. And which model you're going for, from what period. Can you be a bit more specific?

a bit of green laning and mud would the 2.5 be ok with this

Well, yes, Discoveries are pretty good off road. There are 2 different 2.5TDi engines - 200tdi (original model) or 300tdi (facelift model with updated interior and frontend). 300tdis are available for fairly reasonable money these days; a stock one will be able to cope very admirably with a bit of laning, particularly with decent tyres, or you can start bolting bits on until you run out of money.
