Title: Dim-Dip
Post by: DMcCanney on June 05, 2007, 20:16:44
Hello,

Does anyone know when dim-dip lighting stopped being fitted to Discoverys?  I've just checked on my 1998MY 300 TDi and it doesn't have it.

according to wikipedia..."UK regulations briefly required vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1987 to be equipped with a dim-dip device or daytime running lamps, except such vehicles as comply fully with ECE Regulation 48 regarding installation of lighting equipment. A dim-dip device operates the low beam headlamps (called "dipped beam" in the UK) at between 10 percent and 20 percent of normal low-beam intensity when the position lamps are switched on, the primary aim being to prevent drivers using only position lamps at night. UK DRLs must emit at least 200 candela straight ahead, and no more than 800 candela in any direction. These regulatory provisions were based on ILPE research and recommendations. In practice, most vehicles were equipped with the dim-dip option, rather than DRLs, and the Dim-Dip requirement was quashed by the European Commission. See Automotive lighting for more information."
In other words it stopped you driving just on side lights

It's when the dipped headlights come on at a reduced intensity when the sidelights are on and the engine is running.  It was a legal requirement from 1 April 1987 until 1988 when the EU declared it illegal but it continued to be fitted on new cars right into the 1990s.  Wikipedia has more info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_lighting

Yes and a pain in the neck for me, as I re-wired my headlights with new wiring and relays, now when the side lights are on the dip relay chatters, so I dont run on sidelights

on my 97 V8 300 the dim did was in the engine bay on the bulk head on the right side of the engine, looking from the front.
Had the same problem when i upgraded to HID lights, the ballast units didnt like the dd at all.
Just pull the plug off !

Nah I can live with it, only effects it on running on sidelights, if parked no probs anyway

I have some lights I run on for daytime if I need them, but in bad weather I normally run on headlights rather than sidelights
