Don't laugh, but someone asked me this the other day (as I'm alleged to be all-knowing, all-seeing  )
The person asked me if (for example) Soldiers can put holidays in, like practically any other person who is in employment.
Or does their 'Leave' only count, & if so is the 'Leave' at the Camp Commanders (or whoevers discretion), can they apply to have that 'Leave' when they want (ie; school holidays)
I couldn't answer, but it did make an intriguing question.

'Leave' or 'Absence' is the military term for Holiday, we can put it in anytime we want, subject to approval from our managers, just like civvis.
Some branches of the forces have block leave, meaning they take it at the same time as all the others, when they are told!! Due to being away alot of the time!!
Hope this helps!!

Thanks :D
I'll explain it all

my little brothers in the army and he says - unless your an officer or your daddy's a general you only get leave when your told which is usually the day before !

It depends on the force involved, the RAF used to be like any other job for most places and you completed the form and got approval, like you would as a civvy.
Most Army units that tend to spend loads of time in "theatre" tend to have block leave which is normally shown at the beginning of the year so they can plan holidays etc.
Although all subject to the next mad [person of questionable parentage] that decides to start the next war and then all will be cancelled

The Navy have block leave, Xmas, Easter & summer. However, you could take leave outside these times, subject to line managers approval, but you would have to remain as one of the skeleton crew whilst the rest of the base/ship were on block leave periods.

Some postings involve specified "R&R" periods... for instance... in the 80's (if you don't remember them... your a sprog!) 6 months in Belize earned you 2 weeks R&R while there that didn't come off your annual allowance.
I went to visit family & hitch hike in New England... two blokes hired the PRI 110 and drove to Acapulco! Over a thousand miles one way! Impressed!

I lecture at an RAF training school ( I am an ex RAF techie) We have block leave at xmas, bank holidays are as normal (except for the military bods on duty).
We used to have block leave for xmas, easter and summer .
Courses are now allocated their summer leave between June-Sept which allows for better utilisation of the resources.
Us civvies just negotiate our leave with management as do the RAF permanant staff.
Much better system as I try not to take summer holidays when the kids are off!!! Cheaper and quieter! :D
