Title: sunroofs. not what you think.
Post by: muddyjames on June 11, 2007, 17:47:01
Nope this isnt another thread about how badly they leak!  :o

Last Friday I thought I would loob up the front sunroof mechanism, as recently it hasnt been going forwards easily. It kept twisting slightly so wouldnt go back down into the roof. It needed a slight play to get it to go all the way in.

I found some silicone lube in a tin in the shed. it said lubes up all metal runners and safe on plastic, electrics etc etc etc. Heres me thinking, excellent, just the stuff.

oppened the roof, stood up inside on the seat and stuck head and chest out the roof andsquirted all the runners and gear.

climbed back inside, closed the roof. wonderful, first time and like a dream.

lets just open it again me thought. nope nothing. neither front or back sun roof opens now. grrr. what can I have done just by lubing up the runners? I have checked the fuse and that is ok.

how much is a new roof ecu and where on earth is that buried in the disco? I bet its the first thing put in when the car was built and behind the dash!!!

Im very lucky it packed up when the roof was closed!

Had this with the audi. The extra lube allowed it to pop off the track that had broken many years ago. Was a roof apart job to sort and its STILL not right.

Might also have collected up all the dust, mud and general grus that was on the rails and gummed up the runners. Is there any life there at all, you hear anything from the motor when you press the button?

Got to be something common then matey... fuses or ecu ... can't help with that though... the ecu and motor on mine are located in my skull and on the end of my arm respectively...!

i have tried swapping the front window fuse with the sunroof fuse and the windows open and sunroofs didnt. It must be a ecu or relay.

I would LOVE my disco to all be working for just 1 journey. is it too much to ask?
