Does anyone know what the threaded hole on the bottom of the gearbox is?
I've read about this sort of thing on Land Rovers, its were you put a wading plug but also read the Range Rover Classic doesn't need it as it has a later gearbox......but I just don't know!
It looks to me like mud & water can enter the hole & cause all sorts of problems.
Can anyone throw light light on this subject?

The wading plug dose not go into the gearbox, but into the bell housing between the gearbox and engine and contains the clutch or torqueconverter depending on gearbox type.
I have no experiance of R380 gearboxs, but unless you are confusing bell housing with gearbox then there is not wading plug on the actual gearbox of either an LT77 5 speed manual or the ZF 4 speed auto.
On my V8 there is a dummy hole in the bell housing (about 4 inchs from the actuall hole) which contains the wading plug for storage between use. If you don't have a plug then they only cost a couple of pounds to buy new and they should be better than having a bolt hanging down.

Another point about wading plugs is that they should not be left in permenantly or you end up like a firend whos clutch sized up after a year. They are not a pefence seal so after a while of off roading a quantity of mud can build up causing problems.
The hole is there to let any oil etc the leaks into the bellhousing to leak out without causing harm. The plug is only there for when there is risk of dirt or water getting in which is only rearly when you are wading through deep water or mud.
If in dought fit one the day/moring before you go off road and take it back out the day/evening after when you clean the truck.
