The little greasy vermin are taking over my bird table.
However, as a tree-hugger and vegetarian, and also having disapproving neighbours, I'm not out to kill them.
Any suggestions as to how to warn the pigeons away without frightening the other, sweeter little birds as well? The cat is no use at all.
I was wondering about a spud gun. What's the accuracy and range on those things?

Sorry matey, pigoens have skin like Leather its a .22 or a 12 gague, nothing else will scare them off!
-
we had a bird table with a very small top on,
the little birdies managed to get in , but the pigeons couldnt.

.177 is just as good if not better on feather...no use to the original poster though...however perfectly adequate for my.......
Fresh Wood pigeon breast served on fresh spinach and dressed with ceasar dressing and green peppers, tea tonight ... scrummy as the famous five would say :)

Yep, 12 bore. Or if your a tree hugger, a 6mm BB gun from the market, this will scare them off without hurting them, or simply buy a shotgun and stand within 50 mile of your intended prey and they will never be seen again...... this always works for me!!!!

If Its a spud gun I built:
About 300 meteres and will remove the spot welded back of a microwave at that range with a good 1/2kg spud. Should certainly shift a pidgeon :)

Dave, you can borrow my air rifle when we get back from Norway...it'll take the pigeons out...silently
-
I use a BB gun to shift the cat out of my garden, when you get them on the pink of their bun they meeeeeeeeoooooooowwwwwwwww like a goodun   Only 1 left to get but the 3 dogs have put it on their hit list after it's clawed my roof & bonnet

Hi there
Go to your local pet shop or old auction hall, even look up the paper and buy a budgie cage! Put the food inside, the wee birds get in but the widgeons cant so they go in a huff and [!Expletive Deleted!] off.
Been using one for years just mount it on a post in the garden goes rusty after several years but brilliant way to feed the birds just take the spring off the door and tie it open.
Cheers H1

I found a cat asleep in my 90 after I left the window open one night, it was a red hot day so I closed the window and left it to cook.......but the little g*t escaped through the gap in the panels!!!

Different law in Canada ;)

BB gun sounds the most feasible idea so far. I'll have to confiscate one at school
Plan B is a webcam linked to the bird table, which detects when a lot of grey is in shot and hoses it down with a jetwasher. What fun that would be...
-
i have the same problem, i think some form of wire frame over the table should stop the pigeons

Built a simular thing once, was great we used hair spray to powrt it!
Rob,
Did the 12 bore thing once, blew the bird table to bits... Was very funny we fell about laughing and the pigoens were eaten for dinner...
-
Dont bother with a bird table. Just have feeders. :)
-
I built a bird feeder at school. It had a perch that when big birds like flying rats landed on it it buzzed and scared them off and small birds werent heavy enough to set the buzzer off so enjoyed thier food.
How about wiring a buzzer up to the table somehow? a smoke alarm maybe with a pad on top and a few springs. food on the pad. pigeon lands, alarm goes off, little birds eat:D
-
how about a remote control crow scarer... attach some food to it, then when a pigeoon pecks at it BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

Have a look at this link:

some of the comments by the 'readers' are hysterical.

soake some corn in a bucket with gin and put that out for them that way when they fall out of the sky you can dispatch them safely.
One thing to remember about pigens is that there dropings can cause 4 types of lung infections the humans so get rid of them of good .
Are you sure there not rock doves or wood pigens?
Most pigens that fly around towns are mainly ferral pigens [rats with wings]

Silverkrin works best. We did a lot of research into it. although the UK ones were tamer. Ignited with 10KV NST so plasma rather than a spark.
That thing would fire a 1lt pepsi bottle high enough to loose track of it and crater on landing. The joys of miles and miles of empty prarie.

Pigeons - my pet hate. We're a bit too close to the neighbours here, otherwise I'd get my mate and his moderated 410 up here to sort the greedy little (big ?) beggars out.
Has anyone else noticed that the pigeon population seems to have increased significantly this year ? (and no, I'm not a twitcher), but also we're seeing loads more song birds in the garden, thrushes and blackbirds every day, and most afternoons a flock of goldfinches descend on the 'purple-coloured bush' in next doors garden (ah, yes, buddlia I think its called).
Back to the original problem - pigeons seem to be scroungers (they even try cleaning out the dogs bowl !), so I reckon if you take away the food source, they should eventually get the hint and go away to. I find that the tall, clear plastic bird feeders are good - although they do take a load of seed to fill, they will attract some really nice examples - blue tits, long tails, greenfinches etc.
