evening all, im just wondering wether any one has come across this before? when my front suspension compresses whilst driving im getting a rattling scrapping noise ? i cant make it happen by bouncing it when stationary and i have had a good look around underneath and cant see anything untoward so now im scratching my head!!! any ideas lads?
-
the wheel isnt catching on the wheel arch or the bit of plastic under the arch? This would only happen whilst travelling and not stationary.
Do you have bigger tyres than normal?
-
Mud flaps catching ?
-
mud flaps on a disco! yeah right!! Only Dr Ed's disco has mud flaps, only because he bought new ones last week!! Cant think of when I saw a disco with mud flaps come to think of it.
-
Piglet has 4 of them.......
However .... check yon wheelnuts, the radius arm bolts, the nuts/bolts in the shock tower, the shock nuts.... basically anything that will move when travelling. The bounce check is no test as you are only moving up/down, not diagonally.
-
i have just been for a drive and its getting worse its more of a rattle when moving and a grinding noise when the suspension compresses i dont think its the wheels as they are standard rims and tyres and its only coming from one side and your right i aint got any mud flaps lol!!!so im just going to check every nut and bolt thats in the area
-
Check wheel nuts and brake pads.
-
Check your UJ's and your propshaft joints ....
-
right after spending the last couple of days looking for this rattle/grinding noise i have still had no joy i cant find any thing loose or worn or busted so is it just a case of running with the prob until it breaks or just slowly replacing things like springs shocks bushes etc .im sure its suspension related as it only happens when i go over bumps dips or ruts arhhhhh this blinking land rover i driving me mad!!!!!!!! its such a shame cause i love the bloody thing oh well thats life i suppose! :x :x :x

Is it worse when a lock is applied? May indicate a CV joint?

Have you checked the plastic inner wheel arch to make sure it hasn't come adrift :?:
-
is it a rattling noise like a chain dragging/jingling along the road as you drive? mine does this its the brake pads and pins holding them rattling about
-
is it the wheel bearing binding on
-
its realy more of a rattle and i have checked the wheels for play etc jacked her up put her in neutal spun the wheel and the pins and springs for the brake pads are rust snug fit!my worry comes when the front left suspention compresses it makes a noise like tyre on metal but a higher pitch and it not rubbing any where
-
Peasey how long does the noise go on for ie just as the spring is compressed or longer. If longer can you stop it by applying the brakes.

no the high pitch noise only starts when the motor goes down a dip in the road and then stops but the ratlle is there all the time and i can live with that its just the loud noise when the suspension compreses that im bothered about im certain that its suspension related

Muck in your springs or dampers.
