Title: Fan Belt Tensioner + Water pump
Post by: cardiff_gareth on June 24, 2007, 20:06:06
Took off the tensioner today as the fan belt had got shredded and Bearmach man told me that it was probably the tensioner that had caused it. I've got a new bearing for it so:

* How do you change the bearing in the tensioner (beginner layman terms please :!:  ??

When it's off it spins really easily and it has about 1mm play in it so I think it needs to be changed.

BUT....

I don't think that was the problem as when I span the water pump it hardly moved and when I checked for play, I could rock the pulley bit about 1cm back and forth

Looks like I need a new water pump :!:

If by fan belt tensioner u mean serpentine belt tensioner then its just a simple pattern part. I paid about £55.

You can shim the tensioner out by putting a 2p piece at the underside of the tensioner bearing to compesate for wear but I'ts not worth the risk imo.

Yep thats the one but rather than buy the pattern part, Bearmach sold me the bearing so that I could try that rather than replace the whole thing - save some money.
There is a way of changing the bearing in the tensioner, I just don't know how !!

Cheers for that Chris, all done now, no play at all so well happy, I even used the same socket that the guy on the web used

but the water pump still baffles me :!:

I went to take the water pump off. Saw the 3 10mm bolts that hold the wheel on the water pump but when I go to try and undo them to get to the bolts behind it to remove the actual pump, the wheel spins around

Is the a special technique to removing this wheel without damaging it :?:
