Title: Tyres rubbing

about a year ago I adjusted the lock on the steering as the grizzly claws were rubbing on a huge bit of metal. No idea what the metal thing is called though but runs horizontaly.

Anyway. I now have bfg at's on and have done for over 6months and now when I am in reverse on full lock to the left the tyres catch again on the big bit of metal.

There is no signs of the adjuster bolt being done up as all is tight etc. There is a small amount of weeping from the swivel though.

Is there anything that could cause the tyres to now rub or is it just one of those things that happens? Is it the steering box becoming loose in its old age???

Its called the radius arm is that big bit of horzontal metal.

If they were OK 6 months ago but now rub especially in reverse it could be a couple of things that are roughly similar - the general state of your steering components or suspension bushes has gotten worse over time and is allowing more axle movement than 6 months ago.

New bushes in certain places will cure it - best thing to check is the pan-hard rod (runs across teh front from the steeringbox down at a funny angle to teh axle on the opposide side of the truck), as that will allow the axle to move relative to everything else if the bushes are worn and it would be the first place I would look.......

tried to have a fettle with a grease gun (see my other thread called 1 hour to find.......)

I have noticed though that......

the stop bolt on the drivers side doesnt hit the axle casing square on. The bolt hits the side of it. I have unscrewed the bolt a bit but all that does is move where the bolt hits the side of the axle and does sweat sod all to the steering lock.

I have now put the grizzly claws on for the weekend and I can clearly see were it catches big time. On the radius arm it has a dimble / concave shape where the metal is formed. even in the dimple area the tyre is rubbing in there. Mental note to self. Once i hit full lock easy off half a turn!

im baffled and am useless at mechanics as previous post shows!

Check the swivel bearings top and bottom movement in the wheel, that was the cause of mine

the passenger side swivel has oil around the top half.

how do i check the swivel bearings? I had the bearing replaced on the drivers side a few months back. passenger side moves very slightly but mechanic said it is nothing to be worried about or will effect the disco.

not been anywhere to bend it in the past few months. they also look straight. on bar though infront of the diff has a kink in but looks like a machined kink around the diff and not a tree stump one. it also bends the wrong way for me to have driven into it.

yep thats supposed to be there  :lol:
is the tracking ok ? mine has a habbit of setting itself up  :roll:
cant see the swivle housing to make a diff if there loose as the play will be in the wrong plain to effect the steering when catching
sound to me like it something to do with the tracking,trackrod or along the lines
you dont have to catch the trackrod to bend it
it can be ben by hitting things with wheels to hard  :oops:

tracking is slightly out but thwen garage went to adjust it in about december time the bolts to adjust it are rusted solid and even good old dousing with WD40 wont shift them.

I dont know what a track rod end looks like so cant comment if it is not right or not. :(

I am staying with landy mates this weekend so they maybe able to shed some light on the quest. It is a bit nerving though to be doing 100miles each way with steering as is but on motorways it is fine. small b roads it is worse! could be all b roads around here have a very bad tarmac surface and the steering stops have just worn away. Lets hope so!!!

If you've had the treacking done or disturbed the track rod at all this will cause problems as the lock stops are ont he front of the swivels but the tyres catch on the back, so the LH hub stops the RH wheel catching and vica-versa.  Friday afternoon design me thinks :roll:

I got the tracking checked just before xmas and it was miniscualy out. They tried to adjust it but the adjusting bolts are rusted solid. I have tried good old WD40 on it every day for a week but to no avail.

Maybe I need to hit a pot hole hard just in the right direction to make the tracking go back to where it should be!
