Title: Driving to Bulgaria - any tips / advice
Post by: pandasharka on June 27, 2007, 21:51:20
Evening all

Well first month of Range Rover ownership has been excellent so far, the car is running well and it has been a pleasure so far (that means trouble can only be around the corner... )

the reason we bought the car is that we are shortly emigrating to Bulgaria where it will come in handy for the roads especially in the winter when snow is a problem (cant wait)

re. the drive over to bulgaria - we have had the car serviced and checked over. BUT can anyone advise on things we should check before we leave (sept) and spares we should take. (as well as a prayer)

It goes without saying we have a large sense of adventure (we are taking our 16 month daughter with us), wont be rushing, but it would just help if fellow members can offer any hinters?

one thing i was wondering - do these cars have timing chain or belt? (3.9). never thought to check when it might have been changed when bought the car / had serviced.

any advice from you guys would be invaluable - hope to hear from you.

Cheers

Mark

Just one thing,if it runs on lpg find out what kind of filler nozle they have on the gas pumps over there and get an adaptor if you need one.
I believe lpg is widely available over there, and check what kind of mix of gas they have ,ratio of butane/propane and wether you can adjust to suit.
I'm sure someone willbe along with further advice :)
Good luck! :)

did that drive last summer its about three and a half days to do with three stopovers at night
we did it in a bus camper conversion top speed of 70mph and average of 55mph so we wernt rushing
only need to get insurance for out side the eu  ie slovinia but check with your insurer where u are covered  as they dont issue green cards any more so we had to get a covering letter from them which was checked at all crossings
also will need internat licence for slovinia and bulgaria can get that from RAC for a fiver
there are tolls to pay but not to bad depends on the route u take
we did dover /callies france belgium germany austria croatia serbia/montinergro slovinia bulgaria if u want to chat call me on skype ekken3011 or pm and i can call u on land line as we have pre paid calls

also photo copy and original vehicle documents
take plenty of copies as some countrys like to keep the copies of log books and licences and it saves time

Apart from the legal requirements such as spare bulbs, hivi jackets etc I'd also recommend taking some tyre mousse, jump leads, tow rope, spare pinion oil seals for the diffs, spare oil and a decent tool kit.

I managed to trash a couple of oil seals (probably due to grounding) and I'm glad I had those with me as they would have been a nightmare to source in Spain at the time.
