Post by: spy on June 30, 2007, 18:36:27
I hav e seen one for sale with a 2.5 n/a transit lump in.  Has anyone ever had one?  How does it compare power wise? Should it manage motorway speeds?

Cheers,

Mike

Has anyone had one what?

If you mean a defender then i guess you arent talking about the new 07 model.....if i was you i'd not bother with a 2.5n/a diesel engine, itll be crap!

I have a 2.5nad in my 110. Slow but goes all day long.

I have 33 12.5 16's on, and your lucky if yo see the better side of 50mph.

I have heard that the transit diesel is no better, and is noisier. Believe it or not.

All I've heard was not good things on the transit transplant.

The NEW one however is fantastic.

I put a 2.5 na transit diesel into my series 3 lwb, it is noisy but i usedto get 80 out of it on the moterways with an overdrive. It was good offroad awell as it had plenty of torque and you could thrash it and not worry about it as it is a bombproof engine. the only trouble i had with it was when offroading the starter moter used to fill with water.

I owned one about ten years ago....in fact fitted the engine after I realised that I couldn't afford to run a V8. In a 90 it used to average 28mpg at 70-80mph (80 on the flat or down hills!), driven carefully did about 32. Would pull 5th gear on 235/85R16s although needed 4th on hills. Offroad had more pull than a tdi off boost and in slippery conditions could use 2nd low where a tdi would spin its wheels.

Very noisy, I fitted masses of sound deadening, to the extent of fitting barrier mat between the dash and the bulkhead.

For offroading the sump is quite low so should be fitted with extended bumpstops.
