Since the heater matrix is fed by collant water from the engine... it shouldn't produce smoke... sound more like the fan motor to me...
Still a [Editedt to save the moderators blushes] of a thing to change!
Good motor factors, Paddocks, Craddocks or a stealership should be able to help for varying amounts of beer tokens!

And why did you put on the heat in July?

You've never been to the UK have you....?

I'm inclined to agree with skibum, I'd say its the fan in the heater box :(
Speaking as someone who has replaced this, it is a PITA to do
You start by removing the centre console, then the centre fascia, then the steering wheel, then the entire dash.
once that lots out you will find the heater box (you can see it once the centre fascia is off, you just can't get to the fans)
Disconnect the heating matrix pipes in the engine bay, then remove heater box. Once thats out you may find that the fan has melted its way through the box, so you then need a second hand one (you could buy new if you really wanted to!) then refit. if the heater box hasn't melted then you can just replace the fan (I think I have one somewhere as I ended up replacing the heater box as mine was melted)
I don't know why mine did this, as I checked the wires and there was no shorts or anything, and it has worked fine since.
set aside a couple of days

Agreed! Take your time with this job it is long and laborious but not too taxing, if i can do it anyone can. In relation to the fan motor they are no longer made for the 1990 models, i tried to source one for my 1991 disco, no joy from land rover.
There are after market motors available, i was quoted £220+vat . I ended up getting a second hand heater box complete with fan motor and matrix from a breaker. Much easier to replace the whole unit as trying to just get the motor out of the heater box is a nightmare.

Yep thats right, as the aircon blower is additional inside the heater box
-
be carefull just using the aircon... I tried that and ended up with vast amounts of magic smoke pouring out of the dash on the way back from the birthday bash... still, it's been fixed now :D

How much is this gonna cost me?

The heater boxes you can pick up cheap from Eblag, its the time factor, thats what costs.

Thats exactly what happened to mine, smoke puoring out from behind the dash, heater blowe had seized  ,
Not an expenive job but about a good days graft & some cut knuckles

If you have aircon, then you need an aircon one! theyre different as they have fans at both ends and the aircon control as part of the switches/levers up front. As far as I know though the V8 ones are the same as the diesel ones

Cheers guys
