I'm buying some lights. Halogen ones, bit sick of the old sealed candles and one's not working now. I've seen some at paddocks at 19.95 a pair. Question is, do I need to buy new bowls as well? Haven't taken the sealed beams out to look at them, do they have bowls? Do they have different bowls to halogen units? Bit stuck here, help! ](*,)

The halogen replacements normally are a straight swap for the sealed beam units. (You are just changing the glass bit)
You will need to re-use your existing bowls and chrome rings, so if they are shot or the adjusters are corroded away then they will need replacing.
You might also want to make sure your wiring is all in good nick, as the halogens won't work at their best if they can't get the volts they need.

Chances are your 90" still fitted with metal bowls.... which will be corroded!
Better off getting some plastic ones at the same time... much better IMHO!
(£20 for the lamps is a good price too)... plastic bowls are usually about £12 each... but worth it in the long run.
As a side note.... not all Halogen lamps are a straight swop... changed some on a 90" the other day for a bloke... came to fit them to the old metal bowls and the clamping area on the new light was narrower than the old, and they did not get securely clamped by the old bowl - which meant they would bounce around!!!....
went and bought some new plastic ones.... job done.
(well once I'd sorted out the wiring that had been bodged by a certain Land Rover 'specialist' in the Midlands who name begins with L! - Bl****y scotchlocks!!!!)

I've got these - http://www.powerfuluk.com/Crystal_Halogen_Headlights.htm
Vast improvement and a plastic lens which wont crack if I get them underwater at night.

A good MOT tester might not like them....
From the site :-
"E Mark Approved ?"
"No, Can only be legally fitted into pre-1974 vehicles"

I'll tell you in June! I'd be quite surprised if they were picked up on, but I kept the sealed units just in case!

;-)
Good thinking that man

I think the Paddock ones are Ring. They are Indian import lamps that have the lugs too small and rattle as stated. I would recommend the Wipac Quadoptics. They are generally better quality. Check with Paddocks to see what make they are. They sound a bit too cheap for Wipac. Would expect them to be around the £30 mark.
Drop me a PM..... I'll see what I can do for you should you want the wipac ones :D Sorry..... that wasn't at all subtle was it? :?

I use Quadoptics... they went in nicely.
Good output right up to the point where I cracked them both... now they have little fishies swimming around in them ;-)
30 quid plus vat is about right for them :

So if you can do them cheaper, no matter how unsubtle it might be... then it might be worth a look :-)

Might be able to if you ask nicely!! We sell the ones with side lights for Minis and without for Morris Minors. It is the latter that fits the 90/110/Defender range.

Just to add a tuppence worth,
IME, the Hella converstions (difficult to get hold off), although more expensive than Ring and Wipac, are probably the best made and longest lasting.
Worth tracking down.

Yep, that's a fair comment. They tend to be around £30 each though, which most of our customers would cough and splutter at

i had quadoptics fitted in the racer along with 100w bulbs, when we put it back on the road i got ones with sidelight holes  ,at the dunbar trial i went swimming in the pond on the last section & wasnt until i drove in that 1 o the lights was cracked due 2 bein pung with a stone during an earler recovery,so now had a hole 2 let the water in & a hole 2 let it out,had 2 refit the old sealed beam units after a visit 2 drumclog filled the other headlight & poped the bulb, got 2 get another pair after crimbo cos they are soooooo much better than the sealed beams (although having a bent wing that puts the beam out is a bit annoying)
