Title: Rear prop shaft?
Post by: skiprat on July 07, 2007, 19:27:14
Hi,

Im not sure if this has been covered, but i couldnt find anything in the search.

My rubber uj type thingy is looking like it could go at any time. so rather than replace it i was wandering if i could fit a rear prop from a 200tdi instead? would it be a straight swap or is there some fettling involved?

many thanks

Kris

The 200 prop has a 4 bolt fixing on the rear, where-as the rubber thing i believe has a 3 bolts fixing, i'm not sure if the flange on the diff is interchangable, i'm sure somone out there will know though!!

The Rear diff flange needs to be changed for the 4 bolt version. I don't know about the 200tdi propshaft (as i fiited an aftermarket prop)

I have done this and fitted a wide angle prop

Yes mate all you need to do is get a 4 bolt flange and it will bolt straight onto your diff. The only problem you may have is removing the origonal flange if you don't have access to the special puller.

hope this helps

The proper UJ from the 200tdi is a better bit of kit IMHO than the Rotoflex coupling on the 300tdi.

I have just changed mine when I did an axle swap. I have definitely seen a thread with pictures of the job being done and instructions on making a puller.

Suggest doing a search for diff flange or similar.

Stu.

hi guys,

thanks for your replys, i think that modification might have to wait a while.

so a new doughnut it is....But does any one know if there is an uprated one available anywhere that might have a bit better life expectancy???

i would imagine its possible to make them tougher, like with uprated bushes....Polybush etc.

I'm not aware of an upgraded version doughtnut tbh, but i could be wrong
Just make sure when you fit your new one, you fit it the right way round.
(there are arrows on the doughnut deplicting the direction of the bolts)

What would happen if you fitted it the wrong way round? When I did mine earlier in the year I never noticed any marking so just slapped it on.

Just buy the propper GKN one, not a Britpart, soirry but mine ate that within the year.  Mind you I took it to Propshaft Technology in Rotherham (thanks Bulli) and they fitted a new inner support bush too, worth doing.
