Title: TIMING BELT

My Dad's 1.6 8 valve Vitara ( S reg) is due a timing belt.
What sort of job is it. Are there any pitfalls, special tools,etc or hints to it.

ive got to do mine to at some point. my dads mate said it should be fairly straight forward, just mark everything ie cam wheel, crank shaft wheel if that makes sence. i might do mine today, ill let you know how i get on

Its fairly simple just mark everything, probably and idea to renew the tensioner as well.

I've tracked down a kit (belt/tensioner etc everthing needed) for a approx £30 +p&p from a supplier in Dewsbury 01924 451277 so I'll have ago.
I did my Discovery last week and that wasn't too bad.

It looks easy enough. Just mark everything up or follow the procedure in the book of lies :) I seem to recalll its no great thing to get it off.

just did mine, easier said that done. the first thing to lossen is obviously the fan belt, but my alternator was being a pain and wouldnt budge (even after lossening both mounting bolts. after some swearing i pried the fan belt out using two screwdrivers. then to remove the timing belt cover you have to remove the crankcase pulley, but to get to that easily i had to remove the fan and the fan/radiator cover. again after some swearing i removed both of them, and then the pulley. my timing belt cover was a mess, someone had cut it in half so i need a new one because the bottom half rubs against the timing belt itself. the timing belt itself was easier enough to change, i just marked the cam pulley and crank pulley against the engine block using tipex. then it was just a case of putting it back together.

anyone know where i can get a timing belt cover other than a main dealer?
