Title: Is it Friday the 13th or something...????
Post by: Disco-Ron on July 13, 2007, 18:27:03
First up the steering box blows the seal out, and now i'm changing the t/b end uj in the front prop, well, the uj has gone 'tight' when i fitted it.. does this mean i've done it wrong?? also, i greased the slider, which has a rubber boot thingy over it, so i thought i'd slide the boot back and make sure grease was coming out the end of the splines.... what do i find??? a boot full of water, and when i grease it, the grease seems to be coming out of a rubber seal behind the uj, not going into the splines at-all......

Is it me, or shouldn't i have bothered with a decent front prop.... specially made by GKN, new only 4k ago..... regurlarly greased, one UJ gone, and the slider seems to have play in it aswell now.....

Propshafts, you too eh?

Bought one from a scrapper that was a recnt recon by a supposedly renowned company in Bradford, only to find it was assembled out of phase

Whenever ive done UJ's ive always found one to be a bit tight.

Ive also found once its back together and ready to go, a couple of taps on the prop/flange cups helps to settle everything back and free it off.

Ive just had my front prop appart and it looks like a recon one.  The splines looked like they had been re-done with a nylon coating ???

Thnaks guy's, i did tap the housing a little to seat the cups right up against the circlip, and it did seem to loosen slightly, i've also left the gaitor in the garage.... no use if all it does is hold moisture IN eh!!

My original prop seemed to have a nylon type coating on the sliders, not on this one though!!

Props should be greased when warm......., that way, the grease will go to all four bearings......, I use a warm air blower, ok, a hair dryer when I do mine

The good guy at scorpion, yes there is one......, said that if looked after, i.e. regular greasing, then uj's should last for ever...

Indeed, the supplier of the prop was most surprised when i said the UJ had gone, he said the only ones they'd had go were the ones that weren't being greased.... which as it turns out would be mine, as two of the spiders were very dry!

I find once they get dried out inside, especially if the rubber seals have worn a litltle, that I can only get grease into 1 or 2 legs on the spider.  I'll try warming them up though, good tip.

All OEM props should have a coating on the splines, I'm not sure if RILSAN is the stuff but they should all have it./

Be careful tapping the spider into the cups on a new UJ, there is a thrust washer inside each cup that is dished, if you flatten it you can introduce lash into the new UJ.

IE tap it, don't hit it.
