Well just got these down this morn and just wondering if the bolts are gonna be strong enough?
the rest looks strong just the bolts??

yes the bolts should be fine go some on my disco and have pulled another one 90degrees without a problem cos the bolt is tight aganst the chassis not much strain is put on the bolt to bend it. hope this helps 8)

The strength (hardness) of the bolts is more important than the size, check to see if they have 8.8 on the bolts heads, if so they will be fine.
Any larger and they wouldn't fit through the chassis.

Where are you putting them Simon? Front or back?

they are stamped with 8.8 on the heads.
these are going on the back once the tow bar is off :)
also thinking of getting some for the front too.

Possible not the best place for them but my home made JATE style rings on the front use the lower bumper mounting holes which take an m12 8.8 nicely. Biggest advantage is that I can get to them easily where they are, rather than the size of bolt then can take.
Either way they have worked well, having been used a number of time for fairly heavy recovery and have evan been used to towed the RRC from from the top of Pheasent Pen green lane to Bala off road site via the Wayfarer using just one of them without any problems (apart from the V8 :roll: ).

yeah thats where i want to put some on the front too.
not sure whether to put them on or get a steering guard with rec points or get a heavy duty bumper with them on.....

IU've got the Discoparts ones on the front, I had to tweak them out to get them over both the steering uard and the bumper brakets. Only problem is on a heavy recovery they move the bumper and my spotlights need adjusting.
Personally I'd like to see a little more welding on those :o
I have bent the bar on one of my front ones though. Thing is with a high-tensile bolts (tightened up) most of the load should not be shear force on the bolt but taken by the friction between the chassis and the JATE. Now if you do as some suggest and have them a little loose then the bolt will be in shear, they are not intended to do that.
You will find if you have them tight that they spin round to the chassis trapping your towrope in place, which is why many people have them loose.
For safety's sake use a pair of JATEs with a bridle spreading the load accross both chassis rails. If the worst happens and one JATE lets go the friction in the bridle plus the second JATE ring will stop the recoiling rope or cable killing someone.

JATE rings can be fitted with a towbar can they?

im pretty sure they can just bolt in the same place .
my tow bar is coming off as i keep catching it.....

Hardness has nothing to do with strength.
Hardness stops things deforming under pressure where as tensile (it might be ductile, I can’t remember) strength measures how well it copes under stress. if you are worried about them not being strong enough find some of the hollow bolts......it sounds weird I know but with a hollow bolt the weight/stress is distributed around the inside if the bolt as well as the outside making it slightly stronger, but the bolts have to be made well so be careful if you do get some

I had Jack-Mates on my Discovery as you know Andy, but the 110 wears JATEs on the front.
If the vehicle in question still wears a 'spoiler' (they got the name right), Jack-Mates are a far better bet than JATEs, if only due to accessability for attachment.

Which is what that lump-hammer in the back comes in handy for..... whacking them back into position to release the shackle :lol:

Jack mates are still on the remains of RRR.
I'd guess the JATEs would go on over a towbar, depending on which towbar (not the southdown for sure) but when they spin round they will catch on one side and that may ruin the JATE so be careful.

Does anyone know where I can gat a pair of those jack mates from??? I think a pair on the front would be just what the Disco requires.

OK so I'm no expert but I know that using mild steel bolts instead of high tensile (i.e. 8.8's) is a no no :D

Yup they can. I had them fitted with my old plough style tow bar and now have them on with my dixon bate hitch. I prefer to use the jate rings for recovery and the tow ball for towing trailers. Why stress the tow ball that may have a trailer behind you a few days later?
Also JATE rings allow you to do a bridle arangement with the tow ropes.
You can just see the jate rings either side of the mounts.

the holes dont all line up as I removed the tow ball for another vehicle and went off roading without it on and then the mounts moved so the holes didnt line up. It came off 10mins after the photo was taken to fit my dixon bate hitch!
