unfortunatly had to come home like this!

power steering pump decided to destry itself

she was not impressed at being shoved on a lorry :roll:

You can, but depending upon what went you'd run a risk of burning out either the servo or the pump, and that might be expensive :) (well, more expensive)

Plus you really wanna drive that without PAS?

No is the simple answer :lol: :lol:

problem was the whole engine bay was covered in ATF so had no idea if it was the pump or the box that had given up the ghost and being i had the other half with me didnt want to take the chance, if i'd been on my own i'd have whipped the PAS belt of and chanced it.

my pump shaft got pulled out from i think form the back bearing, i've seen this before is it a common problem ?

Can one, fix the old one any ideas on how to take apart ? i've replaced the pump so nothing to lose, but how do you get into it.

Post by: davidlandy on August 04, 2007, 15:57:27: when my pump went on my 300tdi the pump pulley became misaligned and it shredded one edge of the serpetine belt

still drove it 40 miles home though

Post by: muddysteve on August 04, 2007, 16:50:43: i was shocked it was a REAL rac lorry, maybe it was to make up for the fact i told em to send a flat bed and a transit turned up expecting to straight bar me 50 miles home :?

and like i said before i would have driven it home if it was jut me in the car but there was no oil in the box either, the pump had foamed the oil and it had gone past all the seals, besides whats the point of paying for recovery if your not gonna use it :D

Why dont they beleive you they cant fix it??

Post by: shaun and co on August 04, 2007, 18:05:19: last time i had dealings with the aa i made it totaly clear to them that it was the head gasket that had gone and unless they were going to bring a head skimmer they better send a flat bed. what turned up an hour later......... nice big shiney flatbed!! unfortunately he only had 15 mins left on his tacho so we had to spend 45 mins 'getting to know each other'!

So I rang AA, told them I needed towed due to a blown head gasket, what turns up, a van. Waited an hour in peeing rain for a flat bed, who wouldnt pay he toll bridge so went on a 2 hour detour!!!

Had my first experience with Green flag on Wed, I had to join MayDay because the 'van is so big and it's actually Green Flag, the GF won't recover the 'van :? and they charge more :roll:

Anyhoo, left it 'till late then called for a recovery, expecting it to take an hour. Top tip, I told them it was an auto and the head gasket had gone, you need to convince them you know what you are talking about but sure enough a flat bed was there within the hour.

Beats my experience with RAC, despite promising they would send out a flat bed they always send out a farty little van first. I've been told it's because the flatbeds are subcontract and no-one wants it on their cost centre, so the cubefarm supervisor sends out a van and lets the mechanics supervisor get 'the blame' for ordering a subcontractor in. meanwhile the customer gets to wait another hour or more.
