Rot!  Boot floor, body mounts, sills.  Leaking / pitted front swivel housings, clunk taking up drive.  Warn syncromesh.  Seized low / difflock lever.

To name just a few!

Says me who bought a disco with a rotten boot floor and warn synchro on 2nd gear!  At least I knew what I was getting...

I am sure someone will be along shortly with more tips.  Main thing is, you can afford to be fussy.  There are loads about.  I assume your not talking about a nearly new one btw?

You can buy my 300 if you have £1300 to blow and dont mind doing a few bits! :D  I know a bloke who just got £1500 for a K reg 200tdi but it was mega low miles, loads of history and almost immaculate.  There are some nice ones about still but plenty more rotten ones!

Cheers,

Mike

golden rule about buying a car, make sure its running so no.1 is out. You could be buying a very expensive disco.....

Disco 2 is my best bet out of the 3. TDI, lowish milage for the age, can be seen running and driven so you can hear out for clunks and 'feel' the gearbox / transfer box

Disco 3 looks ok, higher milage (although don't let this put you off) but the boot looks a bit damp for my liking and you could have a new floor pan replacement job on the go. Not to bad a job but one that I woukldn't like to do again in a hurry

This one is on my doorstep, looks a real nice one, I've just done the cheeky 'wanna sell your roofrack' question, awaiting the 'no thanks' reply shortly

could be worth a sniff if any members close by to this one:

add to list:

central locking faults, rear archs (behind door) tailgate dropped (and thus a ****** to open/close, loud diffs/gearboxes, rust above windscreen, rear cross member, front arches/inner arches, heater blowers not blowing, rust at the top of pillars just below the gutters, any signs of identity change (check vin numbers/engine numbers match up to V5, if a tow bar is fitted check for stress marks around the chassis mounts, power steerring pump leeks, excessive smoke (particularly if blue - burning oil, run away!) electrics prone to "alterations" - make sure eerything does what it should....
usual stuff to look for as with any vehicle, obvious accident damage (dont expect to find one that hasnt had the odd knock or scrape) head gaskets, oill leeks, brakes, fluids as they should be etc....

other than that they are great!

 - 300Tdi look better, some improvements from 200 tdi  8)
