Can any MOT station carry out an MOT on a permanent 4X4 vehicle?

I thought they could only do it if they had specific things, as some stuff they do can damage the permanent 4x4 fucntions?

Yes...as long as it fits on there MOT ramp & it lifts it!!
Make sure they don't put it on a 2 wheel roller brake unless they remove a prop first...they should do the brake test on the road using a tapley meter. :wink:

I only ask as my favorite MOT station seems not to do permanent 4X4 vehicles, I'm not sure why :?:

Mostly they only have a prob with brakes, in my experience they just test drive them and rely on judgement.

They should carry a tapley meter and have it tested and calibrated regularly like all the equipment for mots
They read the inertia roll of a brake application, they cant read different braking forces within an axle though
Front axle not to bad you can feel the pull of offset brakes rear, more difficult
The transmission brake test is a bit hairy but only needs a low figure to pass, I think its about 35% off the top of my head
So make sure the tester dont yank the brake on, they should gradually apply it as not to rip out the prop mounting

There are lots and lots of warnings about the audi needing to be done in a certain way else the torsen center diff will be damaged. Not only that but after a few seconds it'll lock up and plough into the wall :)

I guess they cannot be bothered to do the permanent 4X4 vehicle :)
I would rather go to the dentist than go to a MOT place at the best of times, now I need to find another place after ten years of trusting the same place :(

Must say my mot station gets me to drive my disco and the tester sits in the passenger seat with the brake tester so he can make sure its level etc and that way i can do the braking so its all nice and gentle. and it works for me. as if its not right the first time he gets me to do it again but a bit harder on the brakes. and the hand brake test we apply the brake on the wash down ramp (it a hgv garage so nice steep ramp) and see if it holds on three clicks

Thats a good system, especially the handbrake, not sure on how it would be the proper method to do that though, for an mot
The handbrake is suppose to be the secondary braking on the vehicle, ie a back up to the service/main brakes
But it does do a none damage test for transmission brakes

I'm sure the minimum for handbrake pass is 16%....so any test shouldn't put undue strain on transmission...as long as tester knows what he is doing.
I take my Landy to local ATS, the MOT tester drives a 110 :D

It is 16% for handbrake and 60% for service brake
But what you have to remember if people know what vehicle they are testing, some dont have permanent 4wd, like the series and other modern vehicles as well
You can test a standard series on the rolling brake test, but I must admit my mate does prefer to use a tapley meter than rollers on these beasts

All MOT garages should have been informed NOT to put 4wd vehicles onto 2 wheeled rollers, afetr a couple of near-misses with cars such as evil goat's Audi leaving the rollers unexpectedly and other cars being damaged. The tester merely has to satisfy himself that the brakes are in a satisfactory condition, there is not requirement to use a rolling road at all.
The stion my mate works at has a computerised damper testing rig, but these are not a requirement yet either, even though my old Cavalier would ass the bounce test with no dampers on at all, provided the handbrake was on.

My 90 has just had its MOT, they took it for a spin said the hand brake was very good, then when I left there was 4 tyre marks down the road, now she leaks a guddun from the gear and transfer box!! I went back to complain that they had yanked the handbrake on, they said get in touch with VOSA as they lay down the test, that was 2 weeks ago, still no reply!

My tester ran it out intot hte car park on a fair slope and pulled the handbrake up 3 clicks to see if it held, that was enough to satisfy him it worked.

Oo Eck, that doesn't sound right, I hope you got some photos/evidence so you can give them hell!
