Title: Best tyres for Wolf rims on 90 bound for Morocco?
Post by: DogVanMan on August 11, 2007, 20:23:01: I'm off to Morocco in October in my 90 on wolf wheels and thought I'd post a question about tyres.

I'm looking for AT's and not dissimilar diameter to 235/85/16. I will be using two existing BFG AT's that I have with decent tread in that size as spares (bonnet and back door) and I'm looking for a set of four new tyres.

Now.. the obvious thing to do is a set of the same again, but I'm tempted to get a set or 265/75/16 as they are very similar diameter (0.25% in it)and the spares will still be ok to use, albeit narrower.

So... two questions..

1) What size would you go for? (Will 265 be ok on the wolfs?)
2) BFG are obvious choice but any other suggestions?

Post by: Jim-Willy on August 11, 2007, 20:28:26: 265 aint ideal on a 6.5" rim, I would stay with the 235/85. They look so cool wi' 2 spares on.......

I'm still looking around for a bonnet mounting kit on the cheap (Or an old bonnet with one on!) - Can't believe how much they charge for a few bits of bracketry.. (I'm a Yorkshireman in exile - can't help myself)

Any more thoughts most welcome!

Should I stick with BFG A/T's? Or save some money with something else (There's a theme emerging here, isn't there..?!).

Anybody fitted 265 to wolfs? They are tubless rims incidentally.

I been keeping an eye out for a bonnet as they seem to be cheaper than buying a kit, ironically.

Any suggestions as to where to look for an ex-mil bonnet?

Post by: pux on August 11, 2007, 21:29:29: im running 265/75/16 on my wolf rims no probs :wink: and there insa special tracks 8) you could always go for a set of g60 tyres that would normally be found on a wolf rim :wink:

Post by: AbyssDJ on August 11, 2007, 22:52:55: nothing wrong with 265/75/16's on wolf rims - bfg's recommended rim size for a 255 tyre is 5.5-6.5" if i recall correctly... a difference of 10mm is hardly going to cause the tyre to come off the rim - if it was, dont you think bfg would be cutting it ever so slightly fine?

wont be no probs ;) but if you already have 235/85 bfg at's for spaces, then id get another 4 the same

You might be able to fit one onto a narrower rim, and it might be ok. However your insurance will be invalidated as there is evidence that this is not a correct combination of wheels and tyres.

Stick with a correct combination and you're covered.

Also, is it worth trying to get a cheap tyre that might not stand up to the rigours of driving in Morocco? A few extra pounds for well proven tyres will save a lot of hassle trying to find replacement tyres when you are there.

Post by: Devon-Rover on August 13, 2007, 08:36:23: 235/85R16 BFG AT's would be my tyre of choice to go to morocco with. Else wise as a second choice it would be the Pirelli scorpian AT. Both tyres i have seen do well in sand but also are roboust enough to deal with the "roads" over there.

Post by: freeagent on August 14, 2007, 19:47:21: 235/85 BFG A/Ts would be my choice for morocco.. I went last year and those with BFG A/Ts did well, good for those long tarmac roads through spain, and very good in sand...

I'm out there with the LRO adventure club helping with the holiday out there and then i'm marshalling the special stages of the desert storm! Can't wait is going to be mental!!

Post by: Nobber on September 03, 2007, 22:32:26: michilin xzy tyres are spose to be the [bollards] , i will be going down this road soon. you can buy second hand ones for 70 quid a pop on 6.5 rims.

as for a bonnet mount , i put my back door mount on my bonnet with a few angle iron brackets for stability and have just returned from a 2.5k mile trip without any problems.
just be sure to rest the wheel on the bonnet and not the mount.
