Title: Too much autobox oil
Post by: ep90 on December 27, 2004, 08:50:31
What damage occurs if there is too much oil in the automatic gearbox?

I've just checked mine (doing a 12K service) and its got too much in (by previous owner / garage) I have drained some out to return the level to normal, but is the likely to have caused permanent damage?  It was about an inch too high on the dipstick. (not too sure how much I had to drain out, most of it went down my sleeve when I was trying to put the plug back in!)

I checked the level with the oil cold and the engine running in Park (as per Haynes manual)

Cheers

Mainly the oil seals and time will tell how much damage has been done there.
Did you check it cold though, because it increases in volume as it heats up!
So with too much in it may have taken longer to get warm.

I wouldn't worry.
