The number stamped on the block is on the rigth hand side (viewed from the front looking at the car) on the top of the block next to the cylider head, to see it you have to look down between the exhaust manifold outlets of the 2nd and 3rd cylinders along that side of the block. Near the dipstick.

Chances are its also covered with a layer of grime which is awkward to clean off with exhaust manifold in place. Also stamped next to the engine number is information like the compression ratio.

Spot on, it's on a lilttle ledge levbel with the head gasket so you have to look through the exhaust manifold though and invariably covered in grime, but it's right next to the dipstick.  Other than dramiatic increases in compression ration there should be no reason for it to have been machined off
