Have started to notice a bit more black smoke when I'm using the right foot. Now this isn't surprising since I've had the Td5Alive treatment and my map is quite agressive (as Gary put it). However I have also noticed a significant amount of oil in the inlet manifold etc. As I have increased the boost pressure as well I'm wondering whether the standard breather pipe setup from the cam cover back to the air inlet can cope? It may be that it can't and some of the smoke can be attributed to oil being burnt.
Has anybody fitted a 3rd party swirl pot/oil separator thingy to further clean the air returning to the system? Where's the best place to look for them?

Simon,
Mine is still standard (except for no EGR valve 8) ), and there's always a small amount of oil sitting in the bottom of the turbo air intake pipe - I suspect that the breather thingy may be a bit blocked........haven't investigated it any further though !
Nearly clocked up 93,000 miles now, so I might treat the old girl to a bit of fresher air and replace the breather (or at least clean it out !)

Jim,
I don't think that it's the breather is blocked. In fact, there is that much oil that I would guess that the breather valve is not closing as it should at higher revs. At those sorts of revs, plus the fact that I've upped the boost pressure, it may be that the turbo is actively sucking the oil vapour from the camshaft casing. I've cleaned out the air filter so that there is as much air flow as possible but I'm not sure it's enough.
Rich,
I may take you up on that offer, cheers. Watch this space . . . .

We've a 300TDi and it's having a new head gasket etc now plus a new intercooler. Because of the amount of cak that's blown through from the oil seperator to the inlet, covering the turbo and intercooler thoroughly in sludge, I've re-routed the breather to an external catch-tank I bought from flea bay.
Don't just fit a filter outlet, I tried that and it filled with sludge then exploded. nice.

Simon
No worries mate. Do you have a K and N?

Black smoke usually is the signal for unburnt fuel...?

Jim,
plus the fact that I've upped the boost pressure
Simon............tell me more please :D
