Hay guys i just been a way for a weekend down Salisbury Plains.. and well to cut the story short... we had been out all day with out a prob.. we came out and got on the road and parked up for half chatting with the motor on.. We set off up a steep hill and half way up the revs just droped and hay what u no load of BLACK smoke come flying out the back.... so i now have a 300tdi that wont rev any more then 3000rpm when out of gear... and can only just move it self with loads of black smoke....
we checked the turbo and it all seems to be spining up ok.
Any ideas would be really helpfully

check the intercooler hoses matey. turbo hoses might be worth looking at too
-
What am i looking for splits etc? the AA man said its probley a blocked intercooler but he did not even look under the bonnet
-
hi oz. also check the vac pipe that runs from the fuel pump thingy to the turbo. mine fell apart where my turbo guage is plumb in and that had pretty much the effect your talking about.
-
A lot to ask but can u maybe send me a pic of this vac pipe as i dont really no much about heavy oil motors only had her 3weeks :(
-
Blocked intercooler could be right, the pump shouldn't overfuel if there is no turbo pressure, so a badly leaking hose wouldn't do that. Having had a hose pop-off before I can say they are gutless without the turbo.
-
just read your post and thought it was my disco you must have been driving. i had this very same problem last month, it turned out that the u shapped part of the air intake pipes was crushing under presure(no air=black smoke). I put in a nice little boge in and it solved it strait away. hope it helps. i cheeked it putting a bag over the snorkel!

Mine was caused my the headgasket gone on number three pot through top the pushrods causing the sump to pressurise and oil went straight to the inlet manifold
-
Black smoke is normally a sign of over fuelling or lack of air. kind of the same really but both can have different causes. The fact you were off roading etc on Salisbury Plain may have caused some damge to a hose possibly. I have spent many years on the plain mending tanks so i know it well. Best of luck
-
Striped and cleaned the intercooler and pipes.. balck smoke almost all gone when on ideal.. went and tested it and got a blow out.. so it may still be the got to put replacment tyre on and new head light from hitting the tree before i can properly test it grrr... BAD things happen in 3s
-
Big lols, glad i am not the only one who has bad luck with motors. Not that i wish anyone else any bad luck.
-
I had the same with mine when the EGR failed - Disconnect the EGR and see if it solves it!
Blanked the [!Expletive Deleted!] off afterwards - no more problems!
-
All ready blocked off mate cheers ne way
-
Ok Guys finally got to test her today...
And here are the results:
1) I now have lots of white smoke!
2) I still have a lack of power but its a lot better than b4(it moves)
3) When the turbo is on boost the temp gauge goes up so much so that the exhaust manafold was actually GLOWING RED.. (after going up a small steep hill)
Help!

Did you do any wading whilst using it on Salisbury Plain? Did it use any water when you tested it recently? :-k
-
Yes i did... i only lost water in the way of it turning to steam
-
sounds like the head gasket has gone
-
Hmm great.... thats gonna cost a bomb.. how much any ideas... could it not be the turbo
-
white smoke is steam,
head gasket is dead simple, shouldnt cost anymore than £50 in parts BUT as your car is a 300 it might have cracked the head as they are common for this
would advise a skim aswell if its not cracked
should take you no more than a night to change
-
well ill do a comprssion test on it 2moz that tell me
-
i agree with Xtremeteam, white smoke defo means burning water somewhere. i wouldnt do a head gasket on anything without doing a skim as well.
-
oz , bring it round plus parts, bring matt to make tea

That's a bit extreme - most are alright if they haven't been cooked. All depends how hot they've got, so if you can catch it early enough you stand a good chance....
-
i was in the disco when she cooked up. it got very hot, well into red, exhaust manifold was glowing.

Thing is, how can you gauge how hot it got? If you weren't in the vehicle when it overheated or the person doesnt have the experience to tell? if you dont confirm that the head isnt warped prior to refitting it by placing it on a surface plate then it is a long job to take it all back off once refitted. and you are not necessarily going to know straight away. My advice, having done many head failures is that for the time it takes to check / skim, it is time well spent.

ok i aint checked it yet but what about all the oil that has got in the intercooler... is white smoke not also burning oil?
-
blue smoke is burnin oil
-
yeah but its been black white and blue
-
Worry about pink smoke... :)
