Title: exhaust
Post by: sam1670 on August 22, 2007, 15:37:14
hello everybody i have a 93 v8 disco and was wondering if some1 could point me in right direction. i have been thinking of replacing the exhaust system with a performance one. or replacing the centre silencer with a straight through pipe. would this alter much, and will it be mot legal?

cheers

You can remove the centre box - it does add some decibels to the exhaust, however, it'd still be road legal.

If it were my money, I wouldn't bother with a performance exhaust because the standard one actually does a pretty good job (our Henry for example, races with a standard exhaust but with no centre box). Standard pattern exhausts are also el-cheapo compared performance (or 'blingy') systems.

If however you're uprating the output from the engine then you may want to consider a change, but the standard system to perfectly good for 200+ hp.

And remember that noise doesn't equal performance

Cheers

Hi I used pipecraft in Basildon Essex they de-cated it put one of there centre boxes in and made it side exit, not loud but does have a nice V8 rumble to it...
plus, its nice and tucked up out of the way and no back box so rear clearance is better.

Heres some pics of the exhaust, it looks rusty but its actually a burnt on sand from Bures and it doesnt jet wash of either !
He cut out the Cat's, I kept them incase i had any mot probs at a later date. He can sleave them so they would be removable.
Andy.
I keep meaning to put a finnisher/trim ring from scorpian but other things keep poping up!

The one to go for is the 3.9EFi or 4.2 system as it's bigger than the earlier ones and TBH my Double S system didn't add much power at all to the 3.9, it's difficult to do anything clever with the V8 exhaust becasue of the firing order.

I fitted the same system to the LSE mostly for reliability, I was forever blowing exhaust manifold gaskets, I think the cats were blocked though as now I get much better MPG and it sounds nicer too.

Like Eyore says though, noise doesn't mean power, in fact that noise probably comes straight out of your tank :!:

For a cheapo system try putting a TDi centre box into a 3.9 EFi system with no back box, we had this on Blue when we first got it.

One other thing to mention, when I get a nice chugging from a V8 it's probably got a problem, a well balanced V8 with good compression on all 8 should give a nice smooth tone, however big the exhaust.
