Title: Disco 300tdi aux belt squeak!
Post by: glaggs on August 28, 2007, 11:56:14
Fitted a new aux drive belt to my 300tdi disco 'cos the old one was starting to squeal and fray. New belt squeels worse than old one. I have also fitted a new water pump as there was play in the bearing. Any suggestions on stopping the squeal. WD works for a while but then the sqeal comes back!

Someone said to only fit Quality branded ones as cheap ones do squeal.  You could ask you local motor factor for a squeal stop spray, use it sparingly though

Unbolt the tensioner pull it forward place a 1p at 9 'o' clock position and tighten the tensioner back up and you will proberly find it cures your problem.

if you have fitted a new water pump at the same time as a new belt and the squealing is now worse then i would first confirm the alignment of all the pulleys. I have used belt dressing a few times and it works a treat for a while. I have fitted new belt and tensioner in the past and still have the noise sometimes. There are so many pulleys there that it is difficult to pin point one of them without a process of elimination.

As said above, it will more than likely be your top pulley thats making the noise.
You can shim it out with a coin as mentioned but I fitted a new pulley. I think it cost about £45. Shop around, you may find them cheaper.

£45 is about the going rate now, you have to buy the whole arm.  Got to say though, D44 were a tenner cheaper than Paddocks.

I didn't have a squeal until i fitted a new belt, dressing or WD40 cured it for short periods but in  the end i changed it for one of the higher spec belts and got no more squealing.

You can change the bearing in the pulley, cheapest place i found was e bay.

Though that didn't cure my problem, then i found out about the penny trick which still squeak's very slightly for a few seconds when first started in a morning but soon goes off.

Praps needs a slightly thicker spacer.

The penny trick Will help you find out if that's the problem though!

I had a squeal like yours and changed the bearing in the tensioner but it only worked for a while. Then I changed the arm and so far all is well (6 weeks athat is).

I fear it's bite the bullet and stump up £45. I understand the nylon bush or something wears.

Stripped and re-greased the bearing, it was a little dry but no play or anything. The fit of the tensioner pully onto the shaft felt a bit loose though? Sprayed it with Belt treatment spray tonight, squeal gone away for now?

Belt spray worked for 24 hrs, squeak (chirp) came back. Fitted new bearing, noise still there! Will try penny trick. Noise goes away if I spray WD40 on belt but comes back as it dries off.

Try this mate its only a penny and a 15mm socket unhook the belt off the tensioner first though!

If you don't have aircon then: standing by the battery (drivers side wing) look down the line of the drive belt and you'l see if the tensioner pulley is pulling it out a alinement. You can still see it if you have aircon fitted, it's just a bit harder.
Normally it pulls it towards the radiator and a shim as Karlo described will sort it for good.

After putting a shim in mine it hasn't squeeked in over 5 years!!   :D

well i spent several hours driving round trying to find were the noise is coming from ? belts not sure / turbo not sure but dont think it is /
as i noticed it all so comes from the rear underneath could it be the prop shafts.    :?:

Easy way to eliminate wether its your belt or not is to carfully spray some WD40 or similar onto the belt with the engin running. The squeak will temporarily go away if it is the belt. Fixing it is more tricky!

ye tried that ? it wasnt as bad but again thats when i started to hear it coming from behind me ? which is y i think may be it could be the prop shafts . had simler prob on my 200tdi changed all the belt even changed the turbo lol and guess wot ? it was a knackered uj on the front prop but again ive checked these even though they differant to my 200 tdi they seem ok it wouldnt be the rubber thing at the back would it

Cheap baby powder(Tesco own brand to be precise) sprinkled on the belt usually cures mine for about a month!!

So far the 1p fix appears perminent, cost 1p and took 5mins max to do. Wish I'd tried it first, would have save about £10 on bearings and lubes!
