I am lead to believe there is a sticky on here for this topic. I cant find it by searching so any advice on best way to clean it or link to sticky. cheers

what will be the fluid that will no doubt end up all over my drive if I take the intercooler out? My disco has done 184k miles so will prob be a good thing to do is clean it, then not get it back together or break a nut or something!! :lol:

:lol: In regard to the blanking plate, I put a two pence in mine. I had to take the file to the edge a bit, but in it popped and hey presto, a perfomance mod for two pence. 8) 8)

or as my mechanic did he disconect a hose and tide a knot in it so that doesnt activate a valve to alow the gasses to recirculate or summit. all he needed in the way of tools was a ball point pen.

There isn't, or at least shouldn't be, any fluid in an intercooler - it's for cooling air rather than water. What you're cleaning out is oil deposits that have made their way from the crank case breather, the EGR valve or past the turbo bearings.

This can work, but it relies on the valve being in good condition and closing properly. Unfortunately, many of them don't as they get worn and gunked up - hence the need to clean the intercooler - so the better bet is to fit a blanking plate.

You probably read that I made mine from a bit of scrap stainless. You can buy them from Ebay as others have suggested, but they tend to be expensive for what they are. You can actually buy them from a LR dealer as they are a genuine part and, I'm led to believe, they are only about £1.00.

I've also fitted a catch tank to the TDi as the intercooler and plenum were full of oily crud.
STILL waiting for the intercooler though :evil:

I rinse my out with petrol, and then flush with soapy water.......

i would have thought remove lower intercooler pipe, whip intercooler out, spray down gunk/degreaser, warm soapy water, hosepipe, then let dry... as any water left will end up in the cylinder....

I clean them out with petrol. Put a litre in, slosh it about and tip out - repeat until the petrol comes out clean, then I use an old hair dryer to remove any remains of petrol. I use the same method for oil coolers.

Paraffin works well too :D
