Title: Stripped rabbits top end...
Post by: Evilgoat on September 06, 2007, 13:18:14
Head gasket gone between 2 and 3, I SORT of suspected it wasnt right
Oilway gone to the outside world
Camshaft seal weaping
Intake Gasket disentegrated
No seal on the EGR pipe through the block on either end.
Exhaust gaskets both suspect.

I have a full gasket kit here so none of the above worries me. What does is that 1 and 4 are utterly coked up. Any suggestions on cleaning them out? Just shedloads of carbon so I suspect they may have been getting oil.

Also best way to clean the outside of a cylinder head? My steamer isnt touching it, figuring its easier to do off the car.

Are we talking the head or the top of the pistons.

I used a small wire brush on my drill on my head, then gave it a bit of wash in my mates parts washer....shiny,shiny.

Pistons and block i used a pallet knife and a hoover.....obviosly the thing that you want to avoid is the scrapings dissapearing down the oil and water ways so i just masked them off with a bit of tape.

Regards

Steve

More pics of the destruction at  evilgoat.org  (http://www.evilgoat.org/pics/deadzook/)

underside of the head is fine, light brown dusting, all valves are in good shape, no pitting or burning.

Dont have a dishwasher.

All seriousness though, is there nything against getting the head soaking wet provided its allowed to dry, and of course flushed when its back on.

I have a plan if theres no problem with that :)

Cif bathroom mousse and a nylon brush :)

Cleaned cylibders and bored with apropriatwe tools, celande the ousdie and back of block and head, rocker cover and timing cover (you should see the state of the bath) brushed clean the manifolds, refinished all mating faces, cleaned the gak out of the egr pipe. Just about to start putting the carb back on. Will start her up, then rocker cover off, do the tappets etc then do the final bits (water, oil rad, fan, belts etc)

Found  a few new things and the reason for the clutch noe working. Where the cable loops back on itself its collapsed right next to the sterring box. As you press the pedal the cable folds in on itself. Also first and last bolts on the botton row on the exhaust manifold have gone, first one wont tourque up. last one wont tighten at all :( Downpipe connector had a helicoil in it thats ong since gone :( Threadlocked all three. Migt retap the manifold bolts tomorrow or helicoil them. Will probobly weld a stud into the downpipe flange.

Ran all my breathers too so I now have a legth of garden hose between the snorkel and body. New gaskets all over the show, new fuel pump and cambelt, so I'm hoping she'll be ok.

Its damm hot out too.
