Hi everyone,
Had my 90 off-roading the other day when i noticed i had lost drive to my drivers side front wheel (whilst in diff-lock).
On closer inspection i found that on full lock (or near enough that, both in and out of diff-lock) there was a 'clicking' sound coming from the wheel. Had the shaft out thinking it was that but it looks fine.
Any thoughts on what the problem could be? Rekon its the CV join? Havent checked it yet.
Any ideas would be great, Thanks!

id say cv if it was clicking
but loosing drive on that wheel, afink its been transmitted to the other wheel on that axle
if the cv gave up which lead to the loss of drive then you really would no it had given up by the nice sounds or 1 large crack
pull the cv out and have a look at the cage, if its huge instead of a nice round shape
then its goosed
but if it was clicking then its goosed
does it click now tho ?

Yea it is clicking. It drives fine but there is a clicking sound on full lock and no drive to the wheel, in diff-lock anyway. Pritty odd, perhaps the front diff isnt locking out but if that were the problem then there wouldnt be any clicking when it wasnt in diff-lock, would there? It's got me pritty puzzled. :?

if you've got a std diff then i dont understand why it isnt locking out :?
as it isnt a locking diff
does it drive on road now out of diff lock ?
if it does then theres nothing broken
if there was something broke like your suggesting as there is no drive to that wheel then you'd only be able to drive on road in diff lock
the clicking sound on lock tho is telling you that it needs a new pair of cv's

Yea drives fine on-road out of diff-lock. The 'problem' comes when i turn on full lock, i get a clicking sound coming from the right front wheel. I know i have drive going to the left front in diff-lock (i'm guessing also drive out of diff-lock but not checked). That would mean the diff is fine, which again leaves me with cv joint.... Guess i'll hav to try and hav a look if not garage job :(

afink your getting confuzzled here bud
you will be getting drive to the front drivers wheel or else you wouldnt be driving on the road out of diff lock
land rovers send power to the wheel of least resistance
so if your cv has completely gone then you wouldnt be able to drive on road without diff lock being selected
difflock will allow you to run on the rear axle as the front axle will be transmitting all the engine power straight down to the broken cv which will just be turning but not driving
you with me so far :?
if you noticed that the front drivers wheel wasnt driving whilst you were offroad in difflock then you might find that the passenger side was spinning due to you running on a std diff...
which will only send power to the wheel of least resistance offroad( mud, sand, snow ect ect)
only if you have locking diffs like me and a few others will you actualy find that you have a true 4wd not in effect a 2wd which in reality all 4x4's without locking diffs are
hope that helps
but i assure you, if your driving on road without diff lock then you are getting drive to that wheel
if its clicking on lock then its a tell tale sign that the cv joint needs replacing
but the other side wont be far off as they usualy go withing miles of each other

Rite rite, yea with you now mate, ok cheers thanks for that. Well there only like 80quid for a pair. I'll jus replace them and see if that does it.
Cheers buddy

what year is the 90 ?
-
if on full lock and it is clicking it will be cv joints we had this on our works discovery was cicking turned out to be the cv joints.
if something was broken your landrover would not drive out of diff lock as danny says
hope this helps

It's 1986 90. Thanks for the advice guys, i'll go ahead and replace them cant be money badly spent
-
yes, deffo the cv's
your running AEU2522's just for reference, which are the strongest stock cv joint land rover produced
afink there 25 quid each from paddocks
ive got a pair here if you want them as ive removed them to fit som unbreakable cv's
there about 2 years old but have been abused :?
to remove them off the shaft clam the shaft in a vice ( big stong vice at that  )
hole the cv straight ahead and then procead to beat the living daylights out of the cv joint with a 2lb lump hammer ( copper hammer is better)
to nock it off the shaft
its held in place by a spring clip on the inside of the cv
hope that helps you before hand so you no what to expect as the can be a royal pain some times
