Title: Fao terrano types.
Post by: lambert on September 10, 2007, 19:28:06
Found a simple solution to diff ground interface issues. Weld on a lump of palasde security fence. It is a good shape and fairly tough.

Watch this space for updates on it's effectiveness.

Never heard of anyone ever having problems with the diffs bar one and that was internal. The front diff is well up out of the way, you'd have to do some serious damage to even get it to touch anything. The rear diff if the biggest lump of cast iron around, would make a good anchor for the QE2., if reversing the back of the axle casing could be vunerable perhaps.

I'd be more worried about the potential damage you'll do to your oil by localised heating of the casing burning it and possibly the front diff seal too. I for one would make it a bolt on/round skid if you're going to do it at all.

It's the wonderfull design of a 10 mm forward facing lip on the bottom of the diff that does a good job of being an anchor on ruts and stumps. As for the heat, it is such a massive heat sink specially if done bit by bit it will be fine.

Ever welded cast? You need to get the whole thing properly hot to get it to work properly, what type of gear are you going to use?

It's cast steel not iron, had my master welder who i was apprenticed to check it out for me.
Besides if it were iron it would crack the first time you dropped it on a rock. :D

Is there no way you could bolt it on to make replacement of the gaurd easier if it got to damaged  :?

It's cast iron and so are lots of things in life its not as brittle as you think, depends on the type.

Anyway before you worry about that have you changed the oil in yours yet?

You probably could devise a bolt on one but this idea is just a simple fix. If i were bolting a skid on it would be a full pan type using u bolts over the axle tubes and nose, only problem i don't have a press heavy enough to stamp the pan in 3mm steel.

Yeah i changed my oil much better now. Got some bigger wheels too just need to save up for tyres.

Been offering up bits to see what will work. New idea involving bolting it up using the bottom nose bolt angle steel and other stuff. Will keep posted.

Are your diffs like the fronty design? (coils on the right way up now, for the keen eyed among you)

From looking at that I think not (except the very latest Terranos).

From the picture the diff on a front comes out from the back after you've removed the cover.

The Terrano/Maverick is a third member type, where you pull the half shafts then undo 10 (IIRC) nuts and the diff comes off the front of the axle (rear axle) complete in its cast iron carrier, like a Suzuki or Lada I believe.
